I would stabilize spalted maple or spalted maple burl for best stability. IIRC spalting is due to fungal activity and there may be areas of punky wood around it.

i love gettting a discount at the wood store when they call those spalted parts of wood not usable. they dont need to know im sending it out to be stabilized. can make for some dam nice combos depending on the spalting and the wood type
