Can anybody verify this is the real deal? Navy seal 1995 vintage ATAK Knife. Not sure if there were fakes made.
Any experts please chime in.

No clue. At the silly fantasy prices the originals are sold for (prices which bears no relation to the quality of the knife but only latches on to the near mythical aura surrounding the name/knife), they dont really hold my interest.

But be aware, that Maxpedition have made knives resembling the originals (visually) but at a far far lower price point.

You'll have to x-ray the handle and look for the UFO key hidden inside.

Seriously, BFC "UFO key" for some entertainment.

I hope you have a real one. BladeScout is right... good, bad or indifferent, somebody will always pay a pile of cash for one.

That brought back memories:D

Yep, the real ones have a hidden notch under the handle and you'd have to x-ray the knife to see it.

Cause the ones broken in testing wont have the notch hence must be fakes, right;)

The above may contain sarcasm.

Bad news: A genuine Mad Dog knife cost a lot of money.

Good news: A genuine Mad Dog paper weight can be had on the web for a mere 300 bucks (I kid you not).

Indeed it might... and may contain a heavy dose of what the maker was actually telling us back in the day as well.

But you can see how it might complicate the whole answer to "is this real?", I'm certainly not the guy to provide the answer anywho.

If you go and view some images of the SEAL ATAK, you'll note that the spine was fileworked. Not the case with this piece. However, there was a "sterile" version without the spine work.

Somebody will be along with some definitive info at any rate.

I am supposed to look and possibly buy this tomorrow anyone know anything definite or is it impossible to determine with just a pic?

If you don't know what it is, don't buy it no matter how good the deal. Even if someone on this forum says it's real, how would you know they are correct?

To me it looks like a Mad Dog, but I have only seen about 5 in 20 years and they were all used...that's how I knew they were real :)

weigh it, 12.4 ounces exactly for the knife, sheath should be 5.4 oz. those numbers should be exact.

That is very similar to an MD ATAK. However, the plunge line and ricaso area do not look right. Also, the Maddog signature would be at the top of the ricaso near the spine. Of course I am no expert, but I was around during that time and that is what I remember. It may be an ATAK2. But it should still have a signature.

I seem to recall that most Mad Dog knives were hard chrome plated and were a satin, non shiny, stainless looking. I don't recall ever seeing a black one like that.
It may be real but you are taking one hell of a gamble if paying more than a couple of hundred bucks and turns out to be a fake. There was a guy selling some of them in the Custom knives by Individual and you might want to do a forum search and email him for his opinion. He had 3 or 4 very high priced Mad Dogs so he might be able to give you his opinion.

There were some coated. There were also some with no hard chrome. But very few

Yeah Cobalt, that's why I mentioned the "sterile" version of this knife. There were some with no markings, to the best of my recollection.

I'd give the maker a shout and ask him. Nothing like getting it straight from the horse's mouth.

My mistake, Revolverrodger... it's "flying saucer key". Do a BFC search for that and you'll get some old time Mad Dog threads to read.

Long story, from a long time ago, that no quick synopsis can ever cover.

True. I would rather own the mission version out of A2 steel. Better knife

After reading up on the topic I wonder why you would want to buy such a knife...
The HT does not perform (cliff stamp broke two mad dog knives)

And people lost their minds........

If i found a real one at a cheap price, id buy it, and flip it.

At market price......... not a chance.

There are a whole lot of knives at thar price range that would be dream knives.....made by master smiths...........
