What does the seller state in his ad? Its hard to state with any certainty if the hamon is real or etched. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

A google image search shows it listed at a well known counterfeit site as a "handmade Japanese katana" for $113.
I wouldn't think anything about it is quality. Don't believe what the descriptions on that site say.

Etched is a pretty broad answer Open to interpretation. Could mean the sword is differentially tempered and has been acid etched to bring out the differences in the steel, OR, it means the sword is spring tempered and a fake hamon has been applied.
For $113 I wouldn't expect much.

Please help identify this katana I just found

The hamon is acid etched; not real. Modern stuff, probably Chinese. IMHO don't buy.

Mecha, that is a traditional Katana from the Ming dynasty....it was carried by Genghis Kahn when he discovered America, and conquered the Aztec people!

Yup, available on Ebay with your choice of past Emperors/battles/conquerings. You can fully customize the provenance, depending on what you have to spend. I took a shot on the " $39 Our Choice Special", I should have paid for a better package, I got a katana carried by Rutherford B. Hayes during the 1998 Golden Globe Awards. All he managed to conquer was the buffet table, as the stairs and Susan Lucci both proved to be obstacles he couldn't surmount. You get what you pay for I guess

No, fellas, I can state with certainty that is from the lost city of Atlantis. That blade was first discovered by Sir Richard Burton, who brought it back to present to the Queen. It was placed in the Royal treasury, but mysteriously disappeared in 1858. Congratulations on a rare find, Mecha, and before you ask, it was last appraised at one million pounds sterling.

HAHA you guys are hilarious! :D

But... is its hamon real?

Go to Argentina they have swords that really work there !
My Ti sword has no hamon at all but of course it's from Oregon !
It's OK as I'm more interested in jamon than hamon !

Only Rosta Frei can make a Jamon, due to its incredibly complex proprietary smelting processes.

To answer the OP, in all the pics I've seen of differentially tempered real hamon, they've never looked like the one in your pic, hamon are almost always far more "subtle", that's the only way to describe it..the hamon doesn't "start and stop" so abrubtly, rather, it fades away like a cloud or wisp of smoke, or better yet, fog. You know how when it's very foggy outside, there's a definite area where it's more foggy, and that's plain to see, but the border contains fog too? It's much like that..you should look at some pics of real hamon or nihonto, those will show you what I mean far better than I can describe. Some real hamon are more succinct than others, and kudos to the maker of your sword, at least they tried to jazz it up somewhat by not just making it a uniform pattern, like with a "grinder hamon" but my guess is painted on with a chemical and then the chemical was neutralized to stop the etch at a certain point. I know we tend do razz on the cheapies a bit, but if ya like it, and it doesn't fall apart on the first swing, hey, enjoy it. Just remember, cheap kitchen knives have cut a lot of people too, sharp is sharp, so be safe. :)

OP, the answer to your question was given in the quote above.

Very simply: A traditional/real Japanese hamon is created by differential heat treating. It is brought out by polishing with a series of stones.

What you see in the sword you inquired about is NOT a hamon. It is a simulated hamon created by some artificial process, be it abrasion or etching. Nothing more than cosmetic.

Here is a real hamon for comparison:

And to get that fine hamon it must be polished by hand !! No grindinding or polishing wheels !!

Acid etched. AKA not real. Plenty of info online on the subject. If you are looking for something with a real hamon then a) pass on this sword and b) be prepared to spend considerably more money.
