It followed me home (Part 2)

Well, it was a good plan... seated the head firmly...revealed additional decay of the haft
hidden in the eye. Shaved off the decay. Pre-soaked the wedge in BLO...filled the poorly
differentiated kerf with glue, applied glue to the wedge. Attempted tapping it in place....
the wedge took a definite turn to starboard. Drilled top dead center and replaced the
screw... took a good capture. So, head on tight... slightly off perfect alignment (see photos)...
but, I've seen worse. Shaved off the excess. ...and, I got to keep the original haft.
Should be good for another decade. Thanks for the opinions.

I snagged this one off the bay a few days ago. Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes. I couldn't resist. Boys axe in very good condition.

This was a last minutes, made it just under the wire addition that I at first passed on but my friend who saved it with me in mind said "You will want this one, it looks old."
So I said...ok.

Thanks to Brian Rust for providing this link to me... Harvey W. Peace

I love that this saw is still a lot sticky and a little smelly...or could just be my imagination :D;)

Great old saw! Don't forget to sterilize it before using it.

Thanks for reminding me that I needed to buy new blades for my 25" Ohlen-Bishop meat saw. Found some on Amazon. Figured I should order while they're still available.

I got those new blades today. They are a perfect fit for my old Ohlen-Bishop 85, 25" bone/meat saw. I got everything cleaned up and sterilized and one of the new blades installed.

Amazon is so quick!
I like the lever for the blade tension and release you have.
Thank you for the blade reference, i have taken note and placed in my cart/wish list :cool:

I picked this up yesterday afternoon from the head custodian that works my sons school.
He is a good guy that appreciates a good save and the history a tool has of its own.

It's a bladed tool that we have all had to use at one time or another.

Story goes, the old timer that dropped it off said it was used by his grandfather in the tobacco fields here locally, setting the poles for the nets of the shade leaf.

I cant make out the name before "manufacturing" nor can I clearly make out the name of the city...could be the state of INDIANA

SEYMOUR MANUFACTURING CO. SEYMOUR, IND.
PATENTED JUNE 14, 1910

Thank you Steve! I was assuming myself the plate read that, but I could not get my eyes to focus confidently on Seymour in either location lol!

That patent shows a great diagram and example of how the proper, primary handle may have been sized and shaped.
The handle situation on mine looks to be a wheelbarrow handle ripped down with a slice of stock steel plate running near its entire length to strengthen the mounts and hardware. It also seems to have had perhaps a handle like style, similar to the diagram, or more (IMO) likely a stout, strong wood handle in place of the iron welded to the top lip of the socket..(?)

It's a great piece I am happy to hold, care and show off with a story:cool:;)

My mum, mother in law from England, swung bu this morning and dropped me a couple saws she grabbed for me over the weekend at one of her adventures...

A couple of Disstons:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

Mum thought the older with the replacement handle and no medallion was a no name but she was very excited to bring me the initialed with medallion Disston:):)

We had a quick 101 lesson on saws, blades, medallions and etchings lol!!
I showed her the other is also a Disston and perhaps older than the other.:cool:
She loves it!:)
