It followed me home (Part 2)

I have a bucket full of very nice unused NOS handles with some bowing to them, but I have so much else to do that I can never even think about trying to correct them. If anyone want to put the effort in, I'd sell them all at a very attractive price.

I was thinking about steaming it through a few cycles hoping that it'll relax the tension a bit, and then counter-bending. I've only ever steam bent ash, but I do have a PVC rig for the job. Would you just steam once and counter-bend?

Beat me to the punch due to college, Yankee. Just leave me the bottom fullsize handle please. In all honesty if you get it post how it feels vs ordinary ones. Jb got a couple of axes with hafts like that in the past and I want(ed) to see if there are advantages to the "bellying" of the haft in different chopping positions. The bottom two fullsized ones though.... Aw crud, now I have to dry off the keyboard!

I'm hoping to hear back from JB! Haven't heard anything yet so I'm hoping someone else didn't beat me to em. I asked him for 4 of them and they weren't the one you mentioned. It took me awhile but i finally got something in the mail for ya.

Yep, but thats not the real meaning of this one. They are actually regions! and the weight would be between 1,5 and 1,8 KG.

Epaule also means border, and Mouton is also a place: https://www.google.nl/maps/place/16...:0x405d39260eeb360!8m2!3d45.890421!4d0.239881

Most axes in Europe are specified for a region in catalogs. That doens't mean they have originated from that region, but only that they where found in that region when the catalogue was made.

The pic from the French forum: They where used here to make wooden shoes (klompen), but butchers used them as well.

I would assume you are correct about the regional names as associated with the different patterns. I just was looking at the writing convention used to describe the first one:
"Hache épaule de mouton" I noticed mouton was not capitalized as the others that are obviously regions/places.
Toucy1.jpg

Maybe that one, more squared-off pattern is a standard "Sheep's shoulder" while the derivations are associated with different regions?
Maybe "épaule de mouton" as a general term used for that type of axe like "Goosewing" is for another type that has several different incarnations?

*I know, I know, get a room lol.

I haven't tried bending a stave like that but I've had good luck steaming handles straight. I overbend but not by much. I had one House Handle where I went too far and had to steam again to bend it back. You might consider shaving the stave somewhat to shape and then steaming before finalizing the shape.

It is one of the ones i asked for. But I'm not sure about any of them i can't get in touch with him. I've been trying!

Use his email address. He mentioned it once on the forum. Let me make this harder for the spam crawlers to pick up: gmail, and the before the "at", it's the username he has on the forum.

(Allow a little bit of time for him to get back to you. I think he's busy these days.)

I had two handles that I wanted to steam, but I didn’t have time to set it up outside on a fire, and the wife definitely wasn’t letting me take over the kitchen.
So decided to try something simple. Took a left over piece of 3” PVC and capped one end. Filled it with boiling water and stuck the handles in. About 25 minutes later I dumped it and put freshly boiled water in again and let sit for another 25 minutes. I immediately clamped them and let them sit for 2 days. It seemed to work just fine for me, but these were thin handles and the bends were not extreme.

"[...] and the wife definitely wasn’t letting me take over the kitchen."

Next time...pretend you want to do the dishes :p.

Yeah it would probably work at first, until she looked in and saw me setting up some apparatus resembling a science experiment, and then the eye rolling would begin...

I have a two kettle powered PVC rig I've used for bending ash, but yeah never tried anything this size. I'll cut it again before steaming!

Here's a few goodies I've recently acquired.

Pretty pleased with that arcade rasp! Nos! The tang shows forging marks so i know it's not new.

Bought this craftsman of the bay. That line is a temper line! I thought it was an overlaid bit because it was wavy but it's not. Stamped f5 next to the weight under the poll.

This is my first large broad axe. I'm super excited! It doesn't have a maker's mark and though severely pitted i could see there's still a lot of bit steel present. I've spent a GOOD 2 hours filing on this darn thing to get the pits out of the back. I'll be honing it after i post this and i have a haft for it all bent and ready!

This took a lot of effort! Well worth it though! I also got a helper handle for my 5' cross cut saw. I forgot to take a pic though. Next time... have a great evening!
