It followed me home (Part 2)

This is true. On the other hand, you'll be swinging it very close to your feet, something to consider if it fails.

I agree with Fmont in that if you choose to use it you should at least trace the pattern first. Modern versions aren't so nicely curved.

Maybe Bob has the full page of that Sesquatchie ad that shows Indian Fire at the bottom of the page as the lowest grade. I think I could dig it up from my desktop.

I found that file on my hard drive and uploaded it to my server.

Staining and fire treating were ways to hide the flaws in the lowest grade handles. This is why I always steer clear of fire treated handles.

Picked up a few things at the auction yesterday. No axes unfortunately. They had a Keen Kutter single bit with probably an original haft but it was bent from leaning against a wall for so long. The bit looked like the previous owner used it to split rocks it was in very rough shape and had a pretty severe bend in the heel as well. It went for more than I was willing to spend on it. It didn’t say keen Kutter it just said Simmons so I don’t know what time period it would have been from. Here’s some pics of the haul. I was pretty happy to find the nos plumb handle.

Of all the things they could advertise an axe being used for. >.<

Why wouldn't they use a dock saw? lol

In a timely manner I landed one of those Mohawk handles also!
I had intended it for this other Scout Leader axe but after hanging the first one on a 19” haft I’m thinking it really wants to be on a 24”
Whoever had this scout filed the bit and really thinning out the cheeks significantly compared to the other. I didn’t capture a good shot of them next to each other that really shows how much thinner it is.

Since i was made aware of that "built in" hammer in the pole of the Vaughan Scout Leader...it had to be revolutionary, breaking away from the pack like that.
I can imagine the general and marketed user looked at and either liked and appreciated the concept or dismissed it as new fangled and grabbed the Plumb or Collins.

I can't wait to see your craftsmanship...when you do hang and maybe make some leather beauty to protect and compliment.
:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:
