Thanks guys.

During the eighties actor Paul Hogan played an Australian character known as Mick “Crocodile” Dundee who is bushman that falls in love with a woman from New York. In the film, Crocodile Dundee utters a famous movie line that states: “That’s not a knife. This is a knife.” Dundee was referring to the large sized knife that he usually carries around with him. He was being confronted by a group of knife wielding hoodlums when he spoke this line. The knife that it is used in both Crocodile Dundee films is considered a hunting or Bowie knife.

The Dundee knife was created by an Australian gunsmith named John Bowring. He was approached by the studio that produced Crocodile Dundee film and asked to make an original knife for the Dundee character. Bowring agreed and produced the famous Dundee knife.

The closest knives you can buy today as a production knife is Down Under Knives Outback Bowie. It is apparently a decent knife but it is WAAAAY over priced considering it is actually made in China. They try to hide this though.

The knife wielded by the hoodlum was what looked like a cheapo balisong (aka butterfly knife)

I skipped the Outback after.my research.and reviews, but I nearly bought i. I wanted a show Bowie to gift my uncle that was very close the Dundee's moviw Bowie, because he loves tjat stuff.

After.much searching i joined a cult and purchased the Frontiersman's Friend. Considering the finish of the 1095 and the fancy, elabrate handle I knew it was a liyyle fishy at such a low price point. Alas the pics showed the peened pommel, so I went for it.

Damn blade wobbles (vertical play) inside handle. Afyerward i indeed found out its Pakistan.

Looks badass on his wooden beam.

Not saying they're all like this, it may have been a lemon but, I saw a video some dude made where he was using the Down Under Knives version in the bush and the pommel broke right off the handle w/ what I wouldn't even classify as hard use. And yes, they are also overpriced imo.

Yeah I've seen a few videos of them failing under use. I have heard testimony from others who swear by them. I have no experience with them other than seeing some at my local knife shop.

That’s why I think they are probably questionable at best.

There used to be some dip-turd who came on here extolling the virtues off DUK knives and how they were his favorite but then admitted he never owned one. Can’t recall his name.

If I wanted a Bowie with an Aussie flair, I’d look at the Svord VonTempsky.

All that said, and realizing that nobody was looking for a suggestion here, I’ll just say, Croc Dundee is a total classic.

That Svord was one of several (like CS 1917) i looked over in favor of my uncle's movie-knife appeal.

Classic indeed:cool:

Sorry all these edits fun.nite no sleep

Amazing that Croc Dundee still manages to captivate an audience.
Guess it helped plenty that the charecter's whole leather getup and huge knife
was memorable enough to propelled the screen character into
the world's most recognizable Aussie icon,
besides the Sydney opera house :)
The movie knife looked insanely long
along the lines of a "camp knife" of old.
However, that's just my opinion.
Much have been said and speculated though the years.
But no one can dispute that it's a movie Bowie knife
which rivals the popularity of another
world famous silver screen sawback survival knife,
I am in awe that this "scary" looking knife
has come across with a very rare bloodless clean PG rating!
Maybe that's why, it's a knife used mainly to swag
and not an actual knife for some bad guy to threaten good folks with.

seriousbladedude or something like that. He had several threads about the DUKs. That kid had problems. Search for them and you will see. The knives are over priced junk made in china, commissioned by a European company, and marketed as Australian. The company has been banned here several times for shilling their products. Anyone with any care for this hobby should stay far far away from this brand. And yes, anything from Svord is much much better.
