Ive got a Surefire G2 and have been pricing LED upgrades.. I love the light, but 1hr runtime is a bit crazy.. A LED module upgrade from SF or anyone else costs as much as a new Surefire G2 LED.. I guess just buying a G2 LED makes the most sense, then Id have 2 lights.. Any ideas Im overlooking?

There are plenty of LED dropins for Surefire lights based on the P60 platform. The problem is, you have a G2 which is made from Nitrolon. LEDs run hot and are better in an aluminium light rather than one made from plastic. New G2 LED lights have an aluminium head and nitrolon body.

If you just want to upgrade your existing G2, I would suggest you stay with Surefire's P60L LED assembly.

The P60L LED assy's are as much as a new G2 LED... I may just suck it up and buy one.. Hell I dunno.. Thanks..

its 29 bucks and a new light is over $60. Why does everyone keep saying they are the same price??????

I bought mine today for my g3 for 32.00 out the door at a local gun store.

Damn i guess i should have looked around, i thought since EVERY thing in his shop was hella expensive the 30 bucks i payed was also. lol.

I did the same thing, had the G2 for years and upgraded to a G2/LED. Nice to have two of them for different uses.

New light would make the most sense.... It gives you two lights, and hey, you can regift your old one. ;)

Check out the Cree drop-in module over at Dealextreme.com. I have one in a 6p clone and it works great. It works so well I ordered 2 more. I paid around $11 and its free shipping. The only draw back is slow shipping, usually around 3 weeks. Go to there website and type in part# 06090. Btw the lumens output is insainly bright.

Ill grab one.. Hopefully it wont melt my light.. LED's don't get hot, so it shouldn't be an issue..

Powerful LEDs do get hot; in fact they get hotter than a xenon bulb of similar output. (Efficiency is about the same but an incandescent radiates some of its wasted energy as infrared; a LED doesn't.) Heat sinking is a big issue with powerful LEDs.

Some of the LED drop ins caution about running them in the plastic lights (G2, G3) because, as Cougar pointed out, the heat sinking (dissipation) is less in the plastic lights. These things can get real hot. I use the Surefire p60L one in my g2, and it works fine. The folks on candlepowerforums can probaly recommend some others, but the only way youre gonna keep the warranty is with the surefire module.

Ineed: Malkoff is the way to go. It was the way to go before, even when the SF modules were $10 cheaper. Since SF increased their prices, there is no more reason to even consider the SF module over the Malkoff, in my opinion (and that of many other CPF members).

For use in the G2, you should get one of the lower output models though. The full output model will be too much heat for the G2 for sustained use (bursts of 15 minutes or so are fine).

Here's one of the lower output versions (still 140+/- lumens!)

The output is 140+/- lumens. The current draw is approximately 350ma at 6 volts. The runtime is approximately 4 1/2 hours on 2 CR123 primary batteries. It will easily illuminate objects at 150+ feet. The LED is a Cree XRE 7090.
....
Note: This drop-in module was intended to operate for extended periods in metal or plastic lights.

Emphasis added.

There's also the "low low" which is 80 lumens for 8 hours.

It's worth noting that the runtime advertised by SF for their P60L is very misleading. Note how you get full brightness for less than 180 minutes before output sharply drops:

Did you mean 15 secs or 15 mins?? I would only be using it for a few mins at a time..

15 minutes. The malkoff heatsink is quite substantial, and it'll take at least that long for the heat buildup inside the nitrolon body to be an issue. I do recommend the M60L or LF though, 140 lumens and 4 hours runtime, helps ease the pain of buying new batteries.

What are you buying when you buy a flashlight? A tube, which costs a buck or three, a tailcap with a switch built into it, which costs a few bucks -- and the LED (and voltage step-up circuitry, in some flashlights).
