I was wondering if anyone has tried this before and if it works?
my thought was it could be polished better because of the metal in it. Any thoughts?

It works fine but leaves a grey glue line.

Now if you want a fantastic epoxy that is affordable, strong, flexible and available locally buy JB Weld "ClearWeld". Super strong and impact resistant. I have found it superior to vastly more expensive epoxies

JB Weld is a company. They make many types of products. JB Weld epoxy does not have metal. The original JB Weld "Cold Weld" had powdered metal. The old stuff was called "Liquid Steel". Today they call that type "Steel Stick". Their two-part epoxy products don't have metal.

For a good shine you want a rock-hard epoxy resin. West system is a good choice. Dying it to match the micarta makes nearly invisible jpints.

Is the question whether you can make DIY micarta using some fabric and JB Weld, or whether you can use JB Weld to glue premade micarta to a piece of steel?

For DIY micarta, the grey JB Weld is probably too thick and it will be hard to wet out the fabric. I have made denim micarta using West systems 105 resin and it worked okay, but commercially produced micarta is a lot nicer. I guess you could experiment with adding metal powder to a thin resin. That would probably work better than using JB weld.

I use JB Kwik Weld to attach handles to tangs all of the time. The JB plastic welder gets the nod if I am using lighter colored handle materials so the glue line is less visible. I have tried to hammer off a hidden tang style handle and cracked a micarta ferrule before budging the JB Kwik Welded on handle. My brothers wife put a knife with a stabilized curly maple handle through the dishwasher many times and the handle needed replacing after many years. I had JB Kwik Welded it on and when I went to remove the old handle scales with a razor blade and chisel, some of the wood cracked and the JB Kwik Weld was still affixed to the tang in some areas.

I use MarineGuard8000 to make up my own micarta style handles with fabric and epoxy. I add glow in the dark pigments to the epoxy when using burlap too if I want a glowing handle. It's much less expensive than the West Systems stuff! MAS Epoxy Low Viscosity is what I used many years ago, but it's a lot more $$$ now!

Don't know about JB Weld but can vouch for the K&G two-part epoxy in 8oz. jars. Used it for many yers, not fast but it will not fail.
Put together a blade with scales and pins. Proceeded to test it by doing some throwing (Which I used to suck at) and slammed it many times hard into the tree.
No problem wanted a destruction test so I beat it with a hammer until the scales broke. Glued parts stayed in place.

I removed the link. K&G are not Bladeforums members and thus can't be linked for sales.
I used that resin for yrears. Great stuff. I switched to West system and System Three, which is also very good.

The K&G resin dyes very well with their powdered dyes.
