I've got a 2' long by 1 1/4" 6 sided bit I had forgotten I had. Any idea as to what the steel it? I was thinking maybe S-7 but the spark is way different......

According to this it's either L6, A6, or S7.

Larry, Thanks! I had found a name on the bit and it was a Brunner & Lay. I could make it out just a little and now I know what it says. I'll do a search for Brunner & Lay Moil Points and see if they can tell me what the steel is. I'm guessing maybe a 1050 or lower.......

Ken, Do you know what the alloy break down is on S-5 & 6? I'll see if I can find it. I'm positive it isn't S-7 since it was very simple to anneal plus the spark is totally different. Didn't think to compair it to L-6..... A-6 I would think is air hardening. After I annealed it it cut fine with my portaband.

It's on that link I posted Ray. Third section, Shock Resisting Tool steels, S1-S7(cept for S3)

I plan on using it for hawks. I've never tried forging it before, I may change my mind once I start. Should be perfect for hawks. I'll have to fiddle around with the heat treat.....
