Hi all, I’m visiting Japan. Anyone mind offering suggestions on an excellent quality chef’s knife I can buy here from a Japanese maker or company? I would prefer to buy direct from here as part of the experience. I’ll be in Osaka and Tokyo mostly. Thanks!

Look for Gesshin. They are a good brand with a wide range of offerings. I just bought my wife a petty knife in the $150 range, but you can easily spend $1000 on one. Ryusen is also very highly regarded.

My suggestion for tourists:
In Osaka - Sennichimae Douguyasuji
In Tokyo - Kappabashi Doori
Both are famous kitchenware/kitchen knife centers.

There are other Kitchen Knife stores in Tokyo such as Kiya. Their knives are branded but but made by top makers.
If you are a srious Kitchen Knife Nut, you may want to visit Sakai City in Osaka, where arguably the best hand made
kitchen knives are available. There are several makers who have stores there.
Tokyo also has makers of hand made knives such as Fujiwara Teruyasu.

I could list suggested brand names but there are too many, and I don't know your preferences.

Check out the Tafeku Knife Village! They are always open to the public and have excellent blacksmiths, as well as knives to purchase in person.
