I'm looking for the Japanese equivalent to an opinel knife. Something razor sharp with a thin blade, I have miyabi kitchen knives- something like that but folding and around 3-4 inch blade. Anyone know where I can get something?

Yes! Look up Higonokami knives. They don't lock, but they are the traditional japanese pocket knife. They usually come with exceptional steels too. Be careful though! The steel is run very hard, I dropped mine and the tip broke off. I had to regrind it.

I was thinking of a Higo too, but the blades are very thick compared to an Opinel.

A good friend who lives in Japan brought me this beauty several years ago, and this is a traditionally carried knife in his area of Japan. It is wonderfully simple, and finely crafted. As mentioned, not as thin a slicer as an Opinel, but if you are looking for tradition....

Oh man that Shun personal steak knife is awesome. They got then in at my local store so I checked them out. What an amazing deal! It's pretty cheap for what you get. It's such a nice little knife. You can't think of it as limited to steak either. It is a great all around folder.

Take an opinel and grind the blade into a higo shape. Burn some Japanese writing on it. Take a pic of it resting on a cup of coffee. Post it here

I got it as a Christmas present, so got nothing to complain about. I think it's well made for the price, but definitely shouldn't be used for any harder tasks

These are the 2 Japanese folders I have and both will slice with the best of them!
Pretty sexy too!

Mcustas are some of the sharpest knives out of the box I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Not very traditional though.

How true!! Both of mine were able to push cut phone book paper slowly and just about silently! Extremely sharp with a nice even edge!
Both are very smooth and lock up exactly how you'd like them to!
Good value also.
Very happy with them.

What about something like this? Single bevel, locking utility knife in Hitachi Blue #2. Lives in my junk drawer in the kitchen and gets used a lot for opening mail, packages, etc. Cool knife for sure.

I saw a video where STR put that very blade into a cold steel mini ak47 handle. Awsome.
