Hi,
For those who may own a katana. What is the true story about advertised sword cleaning/maintenance kits? Are they necessary? Or is a good cleaning with gun cleaning products do the job?

Thanks for your help. If you feel a sword kit is a must, please direct me to the best kit.

Thanks.

I got a old WW2 Japanese katana sitting in my closet right now. I'd like to know this info as well...

The sword cleaning kits are not necessary. Most people make their own, such as myself.
I use regular paper towel to wipe down the blade, then I use a lint-free cloth to apply a new coat of oil. I just use "3-in-1" oil that can be found at grocery stores.

I think the proper kits are just a luxury. :D

Having collected antique Japanese swords for 40 years, I use light mineral oil (not 3 in1), wipe with soft toilet paper (paper towels can have wood-like fibers in them), and re-oil about every 6 months or so depending on the constant temp and humidity of your home. Before re-oiling I sprinkle baby powder and wipe it off with toilet paper. For a good page on caring for Japanese swords see:

Good quality care kits aren't that expensive and available from many reputable dealers online. Proper care of a Japanese sword is essential whether it is a machince made NCO sword or a 600 year old katana. Of course if it is a Chinese craptana, it doesn't really matter what you do to it :-)

Here's a link to a site that lets you know about all you need. Also has many links to other reputable sites.
