Hello fellow bladeforumers!
I am also a knife dogger and recently Bruce Bump that is also on both forums invited over Jesse James of West Coast Choppers that is now making Damascus slide 1911's and has a pilot of a new show he shared with us.

This has some EXCELLENT comments by Master Smith, Jerry Fisk and lots of other great points by jesse about the learning process and a great woodworker as well.

I have never met jesse, or talked/communicated with him directly and don't receive anything from postings thing link.

I thought others could learn from it as I have.

Jesse James is awesome. It's about time the mainstream media and entertainment industry came across someone truly original, with actual depth and talent to back their mouth. The guy's ability to fabricate is on another level, and I can't help but appreciate his new endeavors of smithing. He's constantly broadening himself through the love of hard work, creativity, and the pursuit of self-actualization. There's nothing better than a guy that pursues art with a passion to both learn and create. I know he's been into forging pattern welded slides for the past year or two, hopefully he catches the blade bug. It would be awesome to see him take on the craft and just see what he creates and how far he can go. I don't think there is a craft out there that is as all-encompassing as blade smithing, so many mediums have to come together right for a good end result. You could get lost in the maze forever.

That's what a few of us Knife doggers were suggesting. A 1911 in Damascus steel with a blade to match! Awesome! The true craftsman's never stops learning and growing. I hope I never do, cause I still have so much to learn! LOL
 
The idea of the pattern welded slide is genius, talk about a new level of aesthetics. It's not the first time gunsmiths utilized the steel though. I believe they used it for shotgun barrels in the past but ran into nothing but trouble. I don't remember the details but the negatives had to do something with thermal expansion being less resilient than mono-steel barrels...Kinda turned the gun world off to the pattern welded steel. There shouldn't be any of those issues plaguing a pistol slide though, so I'm all about a revival!
 
oh and check out his tumblr blog butt pee... It's too cool and it shows you how inviting he is to likeminded folks. The only time I've seen his ego flame-on is when he's lumped into a contest with people who assemble things and call themselves fabricators. He won my heart with that though, people who use their hands to make have to defend their ground against those who farm out all their crap and call it custom.

It really wouldn't surprise me if he had an account here. I know he has one on IFI and that place is chock full of neckbearded wordsmiths. I see more work accomplished here, therefore feel it's a better more well-suited place for those who actually "do".
 
They wrapped rifle and shotgun barrels with Damascus wire for a couple of hundred years.

When the newer modern stainless steel barreled guns came out there was talk that the Damascus barrels would blow up on you. If they used modern powder in something rated for black powder I can see how that could happen.

I also being a man that loves to make things with my own two hands enjoy the rise of USA handmade craftsmanship that is happening and enjoyed much hearing from Jerry Fisk.
Jesse, seems to be human like the rest of us and things can get so misconstrued by the reality T.V and Gossip columns in general that I hold opinions in check until I have met and interacted with people myself.
 
Jesse James is a tool, a racist, and a horrible designer. It's overpriced garbage that's been rejected by the gun community in mass. He figured out a way to get the double lightning bolts into his logo. And he cheated on Sandra Bullock! (that's the worst)

He dropped the price of the 1911 because no one was buying it. He wants 3000 plus dollars? Maybe for a masterly designed pistol, but no way for this junk. The extended frame will also be fun to get a holster to fit. Should we go back to the AR that no one wanted either?

My other hobby is 1911 pistol smithing.

I have used Stainless Damasteel on a few builds and it does look particularly interesting. The last build I did was a Titanium framed officer model.

I made quite a few parts in house to include the unique DAMASTEEL reverse recoil plug as well as the sights and, of course, the grips. The grips are something special, I looked for two years for a piece of marbled carbon fiber big enough to do grips, found a piece and these were the result.

The slide is of course Caspian, machined from Swedish DAMASTEEL. This was received flat topped, but I have always liked the look of the raised rib on the old gold cups, so, measured, laid it out and cut the rib into the top. Used my standard three pattern Ball end mill cuts in the slide, serrated the rear at 50LPI, and machined a Marvel disco cut in the rail.

the slide is mated to a Titanium officer frame, fit up by me and then carbidized again by me. This is the 6th titanium build I have done. The front starp was done by the guys at Alchemy, I love the look and feel of the old Pachmayer front strap. I high cut and blended under the trigger guard as well. butt was rounded and stippled, the mag well was opened up a bit and blended. I milled the front of the trigger guard and serrated at 40LPI. the MSH is an ED Brown flat, that was blended, internally lightened (that was fun) and serrated at 30 LPI.

The barrel is a Wilson Combat that was cut back, not quite flush, then recrowned at 11 degrees, the hood has a nice no gap hard fit.

The beavertail and hammer are also Wilson, concealment style...I love that BT Safety! well done WC! The pad was ball milled and stippled.

The trigger was lightened ala Chuck Rogers style, holes in the bow. Ignition parts are EGW as is the mag catch witch was cratered and given a Cats Tongue texture. Slide stop is a 10-8 gen 2 that I gave a stepping stone look to. The thumb safety is a Novak that I reprofiled to give a slimmer feel.

Lastly are the sights. As usual I cut these from 4140 barstock and blended to the slide, went extra wid at the base for a near seamless press fit, no set screws here. U notch rear and 10K gold bead front. A few other details, but all in all...I'm happy.

 
Sorry for the hijack, but figured since this was a discussion about damascus slide pistols, well, I could show off a little :)

If memory serves I believe Chad Nichols has made a few slides of Stainless damascus. Mine are commercially available (kind of misleading because Caspian doesn't make to many of these and it can be upwards of a year wait for just the slide.) DAMASTEEL, which I prefer for strength reasons. Slides get punished during the firing sequence, and there is nothing worse than hearing the slide crack when shooting +P rounds.

Thanks for sharing your Damascus 1911 Officers build with us! I will go with stainless Damascus if I every purchase or maybe build one someday.


It is a lot of pressure on the slide and any bad welds just may show! I've always enjoyed my all three size 1911 frame size pistols.

Don't put words or what I am ok with in my mouth.

Of course its a promotional, Its a pilot for a show. The point is the interview with jerry Fish MS and Forge welding. If it gives you a headache?
Please watch it at least 10 more times.

Oh, you want to talk abut forge welding. My mistake. See there is plenty of discussion to be had on forge welding, but you wanted to bring up how creative and brilliant Jesse James is. So which is it? Sorry, confused here.

And the video is reminiscent of all the other shows he's been in, boring, and predictable.

What has happened in the past in his life is really none of our Bees Wax period. Got IT?
He is not on trial here for infidelity, or supposed racism, GOT IT?

Its about learning Forge Welding and Wood Working, Got IT?

Hofi seemed to like him too in the blacksmithing video they did together.



I watched the video and liked it.

I really appreciated that it was focused more on the featured makers.
Jerry Fisk is a real hoot in that one.

Sorry, I disagree. I'm Jewish, I can't forgive him for what he has done. You may not understand, but he's never apologized, or made amends for what he did and said.


Next time why not make a thread on Forge Welding and Wood Working and leave Jesse James out of it? That's my question that you seem to just want to yell about over and over.

I'm done, this thread is worthless. Have fun with Jesse.
