what size Jewelers Saw blade do you usually use when working on the slot of a guard? I broke my last blade i had for my saw and need to go get some more, but noticed they have different sizes. does it matter what material you will be cutting? i will be cutting mild steel, probably 3/16" or 1/8".

you would probably want #0 or #2 blades for that thickness and material, they will work good for wood and antler also. i use 4/0 and 6/0 exclusively ,but i work with much thinner material and it takes me a little longer to cut thicker material with them. the general rule is you want more teeth on the work the thinner the material gets and the blade numbers correspond to teeth per inch.

Lots and lots of blades. If you use them you're gonna break a lot. Good advice above on tooth selection. The finer they are the easier they are to break. Sometimes all you got to do is look to hard at them.
Hints:
1-Use a little beeswax to lube the blade as you cut, just rub a little on as you go.
2-Make sure the item you are cutting can be held wiggle/movement free. Clamp
to your saw block if at all possible.
3-Make sure your wing nuts on the saw have adequate clearance. If they bump
something you'll most likely break the blade.
4-Save the longer broken sections. You can get more milage from them by choking
up on the throat of the saw if your's is adjustable.

I use #1 and #3 blades, mostly #3. #8 is real big and would require a thick guard. You need 3 to 5 teeth in the metal at all times,so the thinner the metal the finer the blade.Buy them by the gross.I use 10 to 15 gross a year, but I'm a goldsmith.A gross should last most makers a year or two.
