I’m a big fan of custom knives. I think they’re better made and a better product – due to the craftsman’s pride and skill. I also like the idea of owning something that isn’t exactly like the cookie-cutter production knives.

Prior to my getting on the custom knives thing, I had never bothered to actually count the number of each brand I owned. I had a rough idea, but the thought of actually taking an inventory of my knives just hadn’t occurred to me.

I like all the knives I currently own. Being human, I do have my favorites and I have knives that I cherish that would probably be absolutely worthless to anybody else.

In taking inventory of my knives currently owned, specific trends jumped out at me; some a little surprising and others not so much.

1. Generally speaking, the more knives I have of a brand, the better I like that brand’s knives. This certainly isn’t a hard and fast rule though, as I prefer every single custom knife to all of the production knives. And in the case of the “junk” knives “brand,” they’re 8 knives of unknown make or knives that I’ve found and not yet cleaned up. Some of the “junk” knives will be given a new home. I’d also add the fact that I plan to buy more from each custom maker listed – as time and money allows.

2. I really like the Canadian Belt knife style. I currently own 8 that are in that style (or reasonably close versions).

3. I really like some of the “cheap” knives. Some of this could certainly be attributed to the fact that I owned them prior to buying any custom knives. But in truth, I still value them greatly (or they’d be gone).

4. I’m not much of a big blade fan. Almost all of my knives have a blade that is 5 inches or less (usually less).

5. I only have a few knives that I won’t use. These fall under the category of being sentimental (1 from a friend of mine who is no longer alive, two from my father, and one that I purchased as a substitute for the knife given to me by my grandfather) (I lost that knife when I was a kid) None of the sentimental knives hold any value (other than being sentimental).

6. I like knives that are slicers. Almost all of my knives are 1/8 inch thick or less.

7. I like spear points a lot better than I thought.

8. Slightly less than half of my (fixed blade) knives have wood handles. This one really surprised me because I thought I had a good bias toward wood handles.

9. I much prefer leather sheaths. Only two of my knives have kydex sheaths.

10. Exactly one half of my (fixed blade) knives are scandi grinds. Most of the other half is a convex grind. This one surprised me a little bit.

11. I have too many knives and I’m out of control.

12. Number 11 won’t stop me from pursuing more knives

Anyway….

So what’s your #1 “brand” of knives?

The knives I own the most of would be Becker and Case.

I definitely want to see a picture of all twelve of your JK's. I think I will get my first JK knife in Jan or Feb. Still trying to choose which one!

JK is coming in at #1 with 6 knives for me.

Buck, Becker and Chris Reeve all tie for #2 with 3 each.

ETA: For folding knives Im not sure, probably Victorinox. Got SAKs all over the place.

I've been forced to sell some knives in the last cople of years, but I STILL have more JK knives than any other maker. Almost all my fixed are customs, while most of my folders are production knives. The JKs number around 15 if I include the ones I've given my sons.

Buck knives for me. I still have 51 of them, down from the 90 I had earlier this year.

I have more JKs than anything else -

I have quite a few Case, Buck, Kershaw, and some Spyderco, Benchmade and recently some GEC.

best regards -

I keep track of it, sadly I know, but I keep a running list of what i have ad what i pass o. I think i'm a little ocd about somethings. I have more JKs then any other knife maker at this point, but i have a very small production collection atm.

I end up cleaning out my production collection regularly for money or just to make room. I don't imagine i'll get rid of my JK'S even if i stopped using one though. I like having something crafted to collect, something could imagine passing on, There are few production knives i have not got rid of at some point, my kershaw leek is one, the BM mini grip is another. I seem to sell spydercos over and over again for some reason, they never seem to stick around but i keep buying them. My boker exskelibur had to be sold at one point for money but i bought it back as soon as i could.

I would have to dig through my cabinet for an exact count but know that I definitely have more knives from John than any other maker. My older made in the USA Schrades would be the second largest group.
