Hello all,
I was just tonight given a large meat cleaver that looks to be no fewer than 50 years old. The only markings on the knife are "Foster Bros Solid Steel 1180". It has a well worn wooden handle, and it's overall length is roughly 14"-15".
I know that John Chatillon & Sons bought the Fulton NY based knife company Foster Bros at some point and I assume that this knife was made before the acquisition as any knives made after would likely bear the Chatillion name, rather than Foster Bros.
Does anyone know the year of the acquisition, so I can get an approximate age of the knife? I don't assume it's worth much, but I'd like to know. It's an interesting piece to have, because cleavers of this size and shape are rarely seen in homes nowadays, as this knife likely dates back to a time and place where butchering one's own farm raised cattle was commonplace. That, or it was part of a professional-grade set of knives that would have been seen in butcher's shops around the time that the knife dates back to.
Thanks for any information that anyone can provide.
