John Chatillon & sons

Hi,

Chatillon was a knife manf. from the 1880's- till a bit after WWII. They made other things also but that was their time in the knife business. They're mostly known for their kitchen knives(they bought out a company named Foster Brothers), and a round snouted bolo that they made for the Marine Corpsmen during WWII. The bolo is worth about $70-80 in nice shape with the scabbard, although sometimes they go a bit higher.

They made pocket knives also, but I've never seen one.

I purchased a small pearl two blade from e-bay several years ago and the seller suggested it was made by John Chatillion & Sons and that it may be circa early 1900. The only marking on the tang is J.C.C. Can anyone give me me clarity about this?

Hello all,

I was just tonight given a large meat cleaver that looks to be no fewer than 50 years old. The only markings on the knife are "Foster Bros Solid Steel 1180". It has a well worn wooden handle, and it's overall length is roughly 14"-15".

I know that John Chatillon & Sons bought the Fulton NY based knife company Foster Bros at some point and I assume that this knife was made before the acquisition as any knives made after would likely bear the Chatillion name, rather than Foster Bros.

Does anyone know the year of the acquisition, so I can get an approximate age of the knife? I don't assume it's worth much, but I'd like to know. It's an interesting piece to have, because cleavers of this size and shape are rarely seen in homes nowadays, as this knife likely dates back to a time and place where butchering one's own farm raised cattle was commonplace. That, or it was part of a professional-grade set of knives that would have been seen in butcher's shops around the time that the knife dates back to.

Thanks for any information that anyone can provide.

Can someone direct me to a reliable source regarding Chatillon knives ?

I am a direct descendent of the family. I have only seen and personally own Chatillon Scales. Knowing about the knives would be fantastic.

Thanks.
