Do you know when Ethan Becker became involved with authoring 'Joy of Cooking'?

'The Silence of the Lambs' is my favorite book - tied with 'American Psycho' - but it takes the lead since I read it at such a young age. It was a crazy book for a 12 year old to read.

Does anyone know what year Ethan became involved with the book? 'Joy of Cooking' is featured in both 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal'. They play a pretty big role in both books. Hannibal Lecter uses the book for something in the first book and his signed copy that was in his cell was part of a storyline in 'Hannibal'.

Any information would be appreciated. If I could find the oldest hardcover copy that Ethan was involved with at the used bookstores in the area, hopefully it will be a version used in the books - I can figure out if it is by reading and comparing - I don't know what would happen.....my mind would be blown that's for sure.

i think Ethan got involved after his mom gave birth to him?

yes, we know :) Ethan knows too :)

i have a signed copy :}

the fava bean recipe. mmm mm mmm, good.

you can also buy a reproduction of the original book for around $20? it's a hoot. has the boot skinning methods, and bizarre old recipes.

hmm, interesting I didn't know that....

I also didn't know Ethan had recipes on how to cook a human brain:eek:..

learn something everyday...... But to answer directly I have no idea when Ethan wrote the book, but I do know google is kind. :D

i think it's correct to say Ethan didn't write the book per se, it's his family's business though and caretakers all. the more recent version has many additions and improvements, esp the Know Your Food section, which his wife Susan played a large part, as i recall.

i've felt his book should come with a necker or something :) and his line of kitchen knives would rock :)

I am going to scour the TSOTL for info to try to find the right version and then try to find the copy that Thomas Harris used to come up with the code. If I can find it, I will be in 'Terminator Mode' in an effort to get it autographed.

I won't be able to be bargained with. I won't be able to be reasoned with. I will not feel pity, or remorse, or fear.....and I absolutely will not stop....EVER....until it is signed. (I love that quote)

Actually, I'd probably beg, cry, kneel down and humbly ask if someone could get the man to sign it for me. I would love to have it to accompany my 'Hannibal Lecter' book collection. The book (and series....including Red Dragon) had a big impact on me reading it at such a young age and I still think it is amazing....although the end to Hannibal (book) is kind of hokey.

Show up at Blade or a chop-in with it in hand. I'll bet Ethan would be happy to sign it.

some of ethan's pictures with knife in hand remind me of hannibal ;)

I'd love to be able to make it to a Blade or other meeting but I don't have reliable transportation.

I could always take a plane, but I'd have a hard time trying to make a vacation out of a knife event!

The end of Hannibal was great and so much better than the movie. The movies are entertaining, but don't really develop the Lecter character to his full extent. In the books, he is almost the good guy.

Joy of Cooking is a great and classic cookbook. I put it slightly behind "Mastering the art of French Cooking" by J. Child and ahead of Claiborne's "NY Times Cookbook" with Jaques Pepin.

He should see this, if there is a way to get it signed, he may suggest it, like, oh, I don't know, shipping it to him to sign. Who knows? Ethan does.

The ending of the book was better than the ending of the movie, but the book ends on kind of a weird note...like a happy ending in a twisted way. I guess it fits, I'll have to dig it out and read the last couple of chapters again.

I agree, the books have great character development for Dr. Lecter. Hopkins did a great job in the movie, but movies can never beat the book version if it's good.

I am still amazed. I have always had this weird interest in 'Joy of Cooking' because of the books and to know that Ethan Becker was/is involved with it is still blowing my mind.

If I can find the right copy, I would gladly pay for shipping both ways to get it autographed if possible....but I know that he is a busy man who runs a business and might not have time for silly things like this from some Internet weirdo. I don't want to put him out in any way. I'll have to shoot him a message after SHOT about a possible future shipment.

It also might take a while to find the copy that I want, but there are a ton of used bookstores in my city.

He'll see this. Oh, and just for reference, he's not involved in with the book, he IS the book. Seriously.

Yeah he's busy, but he makes time for folks, just leave your posts here, he'll see it, if he offers to sign you a copy, take it. If he don't, well, don't stalk him or anything, he's a good shot.
