Hi everyone,
I just bought a new ZT to add to my collection and got the ZT0308.
I’ve never really cared about the serial number before but was wondering if lower serial numbers on these sort of knives make any difference to the value.
Just thought I’d ask since I just received this one and the serial number is 0010.

Any help would be great.
Cheers guys.

The only reason the number would make a difference in value is if it had a sentimental value to the person. But even then...

I won't pay more for a low SN either but -- all other things being equal -- I'd prefer to buy a lower SN knife.

On the other hand, I won't buy any ZT with a white box because all of the ZTs that I own that came w/a box were either green or blue because I only collect "older" ZTs. Can't say I'll "never" buy a newer model in a white box but I haven't seen a newer model yet that I want to buy.

I don't recall when ZT started using white boxes but it wasn't long ago; my guess is w/in the past 3 yrs. White box versions of older production models (like the 0350 or 0452) will have extremely high SNs but newer models (like the 0308) will have lower SNs.

So, the color of the box can, in some cases, be a better indicator of the date of production of a ZT than the SN on the blade.

I think that later on down the road, when your 308 has been discontinued for 5 years + or so, that it will add desirability to it. Usually the first three are pretty hot and the first 10 are definitely cool to have to the right person for an older knife. And in 10 years I bet people will be wanting the 308. As it goes right now people kind of see the 308 as the only current ZT that sticks to the philosophy of old school ZT, so I can see it being desirable in the future.

thanks for the info mate,
Much appreciated.

I suppose I’m more wondering whether or not people think it’s worth keeping in the collection for display and potential resale later on or if it’s not going to increase the value that much to just go ahead and use it.

Well, it's up to you, either ways cool. I kind of always tend to regret not using a knife while I own it. I've had a few similar situations where I kept it pristine for years and then sold it and while it sold real quick, it didn't net me a lot more than it would have if I were to have used it all those years. Just depends how you're feeling really.

It all depends on what kind of knife buyer you are.

I own a lot of knives (all cheap ones) that I use but I never use any knives that I buy for my collection. All of my ZTs are for collection only.

I have only sold a few of the ZTs that I've purchased and none of them appreciated much (if at all) in value.

However, profit was never an expectation in the purchase or sale of any knife that I own or have owned. I only sell knives if/when I decide that I no longer "like" them and no longer think they deserve to remain in my collection.

So, regarding the 0308, IMO you should keep it in your collection for as long as YOU "like" and sell it if/when you don't.

No one knows whether any knife will increase in value or not but I'd speculate that the 0308 will NOT appreciate (if at all) at a rate greater than the value of older and more popular models, like the 0200/300, which have really not appreciated all that much beyond their original issue prices 10-15 years ago.

The only ZTs that have increased substantially in value are the limited release factory sprints and/or customs like the 0392, 0600, 0606 0777, 0888, 0999.

Every knife will better retain its value (whatever it is) if you DO NOT use it but, if you have no problem w/the likely reduction in the value of the knife if it is used and (like many other members here) think that its foolish not to use a knife that would be an excellent tool, then use it.

So, whether you decide to use your 0308 or not depends on: 1) whether you NEED/WANT to use it or not AND 2) whether you are willing to give up whatever reduction in value in the knife that use may cause.

If the answer to both of these 2 questions is NO, then you should just sell it and move on.
