So today I purchased a Kel Tec P11 used at a local gun store. While I was pulling back the slide to load a round the slide slipped and the gun went off. Now I don't know anything about Kel-Tec but I'm pretty sure that shouldn't happen.

Slam fires are no good. You might try checking for any debris around the striker or if the striker is stuck in an extended state. Personally, I would go to a safe environment and attempt to recreate the failure on video; then, consult with Kel Tec if necessary. After checking the mechanics of the pistol over for blatant issues.

I've had a Kel Tec P11 for over a decade, and have carried it regularly during that time.
This is new to me, never had an issue with a slam fire.

Sure it does not have a firing pin block, but it does have a spring that keep pressure on the firing pin.

+1 on the debris around the striker.

This is why you don't buy Kel-Tecs. They are piss poorly built, Fuck what Nutnfancy says, they are not built to a standard that a person can depend their life on.

Well, went to a pistol range too try and recreate the incident with no success. I let the slide slam forward, and I also had the trigger pulled back while letting the slide slam forward. However, what did happen next was that the trigger would not reset. Which is when I took it back to the gun store since it was only five minutes away, he took a look at it and discovered a piece brass in it. He believed that it was there from the original owner and it just worked its way into the action. Nice people that own that store, he told me that if their is any more issues to bring it back and he'll make it right with either a refund, exchange, or repairing it. So I'll probably go back to the range later this week to give it another run through. Also I found the slug from the slam fire and a little reminder from some powder burns of how close I came to losing a big chunk from my hand.

Since you're not the original owner, you might want to contact Kel Tec with your SN, and see what upgrades might be available. Or go to the Kel Tec forum and talk to the people there. Kel Tec has made a number of worthwhile improvements to the P11 over the years.

Glad you didn't have a repeat of the issue at the range and that your LGS purveyors were good enough to go through it for you. Keep a close eye on it and don't hesitate to take up their offer of a refund or exchange. There is no place in this world for a gun that will go off during basic manipulation, loading, etc. One last suggestion, get familiar with all of the working parts of the firearm and check them before/after every trip to shoot. Check your springs for breaks or failure and pieces of debris lodged in working areas. Good luck with your pistol!

Asked about what year my P11 may of been made. Now i'm just waiting on a reply to see if I need to do some updating. The store did have new P11's for sale for like $289, but this one was only $230.

I am a LEO. I do not permit officers to carry the P11 because we had similar problems. FYI DON'T DROP IT! Your slam fire indicates the firing pin spring is not strong enough to overcome the inertia of the slide closing.

can we not say bad words b/c I agree with AKspade...

PG rated "bad words" like you could hear on network TV aren't going to attract a lot of attention but we really don't need the F-bomb being dropped in the discussion forums.

I'm fairly certain that if a weak firing pin spring was the case I should've been able to recreate it. I'm probably going to have gunsmith or my buddy who is a hobby gunsmith take a look at it just for peace of mind.

Sorry to get you "gentlemen" all ruffled with my salty language. Kel-Tecs are garbage. IF you own one, unload it,(lmao nevermind if you are the kind of guy who owns a kel-tec it probably isn't loaded...) take it to the nearest construction site and have them crush that bastard flat. Then feel good about yourself, you have possibly saved someone's life by not selling them your unreliable dangerous pistol! Now go buy a pistol that is built to a professional standard, (Glock, S&W, Sig, etc) and carry on.
