Just what is Paperstone?

I see reference to Paperstone handles in threads here and in the Buck For Sale area, but I've never read exactly what it is. I don't think it's plastic, but is it a synthetic? The name Paperstone makes me think there must be some woodpulp in it, maybe with a stabilizer, resin, or bonding agent. I own one Buck 301 with Paperstone handles, it is still in the B&C Tin - how durable are these handles compared to the Valox on a standard 301? This knife has the best opening and closing snap of any of my three-spring 301's if it's real durable I might make this one a carrying knife. Thanks! OH

Idk. Buck saysWe understand the importance of integrating materials into our products, and we are enthusiastic about our major step forward with the use of Paperstone TM for our handles. Made from 100% Post-Consumer recycled products, it's the greenest material you can find. More importantly, it's rugged, withstands heat or cold, and is very durable. First used on handles for our Metro TM Knives, with positive results, it's now key to the beginning of our new EcoLite TM knives, which are very light but extremely durable. Imagine a knife with exactly the same great features as our classic 110, but now with half the weight and without sacrificing any of the features and advantages you want and need on the trail or on the job.

Shucks I was hoping it was made from cow hair and resin from the local Bo-hog tannery. Sooey! DM

Well thanks Sosa, now I know it's made of post-consumer waste (like Trex decking, Drywall paper, etc.). Wonder what it is actually made of (i.e, which post consumer waste)? OH

Paperstone is recycled paper saturated with Phenolic Resins. I have a Paperstone Vantage which I have been carrying as an EDC for a while and the handles are the same as they were the day I got the knife.

Thanks for that info Fisherman - I understand it now. Thanks to everyone for their input - guess there is no good reason not to EDC this 301. OH

omg what is paper stone!?!?!?
can any one say paper micarta ??
while buck cant say Micarta as it is a trade mark
there is not 3 hairs worth of difference between what is sold as micarta and paper stone ...

Dave, great to see you around here again! Missed Ya.

It seems Buck is moving away from paper stone. Is that real or just my perception? Looks like it's gone from the 110 at least.

I called Buck a month or two ago and they told me the Paperstone was discontinued the end of last year. We were talking about the 110. I don't know about the other models.

I think if the paperstone vantages were more widely available, they would have been very popular.

I have one, i prefer the nylon. Actually i like the g10 or dymonwood more. I guess it's supposed to be durable but i can feel the paper texture, just can't give full faith into it

The resin used to mold the paper fibers may be very different than the resins used to make Micarta. I'm not claiming to know that they're different, just saying they might be.

I have a few paperstone handled knives and I like them allot, they run threw the dishwasher and I have no issues. I carry the Vantage and have left it in the bottom of my boat after a fishing trip, laying in an inch of water. The blade had a bit of rust but the handle was fine...

twernt nutn wront wit paper stone at all...
I would like a thin stainless handled 110 but ...
gee I so seldom have a 110 in my pocket I don't know why I would want one ...
gudss cause I don't have one ...
got a Damascus handled 110 .. dang heavy in the pocket tho...

I like Buck's Valox (or whatever it is), some sort of reinforced plastic that is extremely tough and will probably outlast the blade.

That 301 is just sweet! This is my first one of two and I hate the thought of missing out on these now that I know what I know! Good tough stuff!
