Ka-bar BK7 or BK9 or both?

Greetings, kind folks of the bladeforums.

Recently I'm looking forward to purchasing a BK14 for EDC and small fine tasks, and a BK7 for outdoor activities but have begun having second thoughts about acquiring a BK9 instead after reading discussions about both knives.
In one hand I'll be carrying both when doing outdoor recreation so the BK14 can handle the small stuff, that eliminates some points for the BK7. On the other hand the length for BK9 is close to doing things that I would rather do using a kukri or an hatchet. While on the third hand I have to consider it would need to be CCW-able.
Due to where I live they are only sold at MSRP prices to its going to slice up my wallet pretty bad. So, which one should I get? BK7 or BK9? Or should I get the BK7 first then the BK9 later down the road?

Cheers.

If you want to carry it I think the 7 might be too big for everyday, you should check out the bk15, bk16, and bk17 for that

I'm in the same situation, have a 14 and love it,.I'm getting a bk15 and a bk7 next since I use a kukri as a chopper

Check out the becker sub forum here, great people and information there

I own a BJ-14 BK7 and BK09 as well as several Tweeners.

If I was only going to carry ONE knife and weight was an issue, the 7 is a great.

However since you'll have a BK14, the only LOGICAL choice is a BK9

Their are very valid reasons why it's owners call it "the king" -there is very little it cannot do.

It's 17 ounces of pure kick ass. The BK-2 weighs 15 ounces and the 7 weighs 13.5 for reference. The 9 is worth the extra length and weight.
Paired with a BK14, the BK9 will take are of everything.

Frankly if you buy one, you may find that the BK9 is is the most compact "machete" you own . It has kicked short Machete's arses in chopping contests before.

BK9. That is all.

Thanks for the replies folks, really appreciate it.
Tho a few things sprang up close to pay day so the tight budget can only afford the BK7, But I'll be sure to pick up the BK9 once in the clear.

Cheers.

The BK7 is a FINE knife. It chops better than you think it should. I only have 3 custom sheaths (so far) & the BK7 rides in one of them. That should say something, seeing as how i have around 50+ knives. You will LOVE it. :D

I was torn between the 7 and the 9, but I already have a BK2 and a 7" Ka-Bar USMC, so I went with the 9. Ordered it last night, and I ordered a set of wood scales from some feller on eBay.

Waiting on a BK9 as well think it is a good choice for a large blade , hey they do not call it the KING for nothing but either should handle all task the 9 with a little more assurance

Just got word from the shop, since the next shipping is scheduled to arrive late September or early October I'll be picking up BK7, BK9 and BK14 all at the same time.
The wait is killing me :(.

I have a USN WW2 Kabar, that I abused the crap out of for years before I realized what I had. Chopped, Batoned, Sliced, Food Prep, fire poker, you name it. I did it. No Damage and still razor sharp, with a little tlc. I've had a 7 and a 9, and loved both, but always went back to my ol' Kabar. My .02

Wow, MSRP? that's rough. Where do you live? I thought amazon shipped everywhere. Can knives be mailed to where you live? See some great prices here in the exchange.

Nope! The big South American river dont ship BKs to Australia or anywhere outside the US.

Dog, cant you import them? In my case I just buy them from Tomars Ka-Bars or off the exchange...Always arrive fine without any problems.

I live in Taiwan. Searched high and low to find a dealer that's willing to make the deal at MSRP pricing, and that's with three trips to the shop just to barter with the owner, most knife dealers around here sell their goods at around 50% higher than the MSRP.
Knives can be shipped here if labeled under gardening tools when going through customs, but I've heard some stories of it being grounded at the customs due to bad luck.

I can only provide the address to where I work if were to order online, but I don't think they'll like to know the content ;).
Took a look at Tomas and the price difference if about 88 USD after customs and what not, still need to work on having a proper address tho.
Thanks for the heads up for the site.

Mine arrived today. Very nice indeed. I think I'll make a lanyard for this bad boy, just to keep control.

When I took the becker plunge I got the Bk2 and the BK9 at the same time and I'm glad I did. Only taken them on half a dozen camping trips but they got used. I keep forgetting to buy a pizza cutter so every few weeks I have to break out the BK9 to cut up a couple of Papa Murphy's pizzas. If I could only have one it would be the 9.

I wouldn't mind getting a BK7 but I really enjoyed my cold steel bowie bushman which is about the same size and a darn good knife for roughly $20. Last year I gave it to my very good friend Evan because it was our last camping trip together before we parted company, he moved north and I moved south. So I'll probably get another bushman before a BK7.

I just realized this is the first year I didn't get to go camping in at least 13 years:thumbdn:

Ouch! This BK9 might be the sharpest knife in my collection.

Another I own that is exceptionally sharp is the Kabar Dozier Hunter. I cut myself the first time I opened it.

I have both, The BK9 is sweet when paired up with a mora companion, I can do about anything I need to. The BK7 just seems to fall in a common size class for me so it does not see much field time. Lately I have been on a quest to push an Ontario Raider Bowie to its breaking point so I have been taking that as the big knife/ax buts its heavier than the BK9 by a good stretch. I reprofiled the blade to a flatter grind, and put a convex on the back of the blade tip for detailed work. I have not been succesful in my quest...
