I have a found both video and text references to the "Kabar fighter" having a "full tang". Are they meaning a "full length tang", or does it truly have a full tang - as opposed to a stick or hidden tang as in the basic USMC fighting knife variant????

Also - is it possible to get the fighter without the serrations????

TIA

Wait, is it like the USMC but with Kraton handles? If so, that is the one I have, and it does have a full length tang. If you look at the butt-cap, you can see the tang and on the side of the cap you can see the pin holding the tang in place. Mine is full straight edge. The only large Ka-Bar (excluding the Big Brother) that is not available as straight edge is the large Kraton handle tanto.

Yep - that's it. (It shuld also have a slight decrease in the blade width as it joins the handle.)

OK - so it's full length. Can you tell from looking if it is a full tang, i.e., full width? Or, like the USMC, is it significantly narrower than the blade (which is what I'm guessing)? The reason I'm asking - the USMCs have a rare occurance of snapping at the blade/tang junction - you can find lots of pics online of such breakage. To be honest - most are likely to be from abuse. OTOH - If I could get a similar knife to the USMC, but with a more robust tang - I'd be a much happier camper. I train hard, and at 6'5" and 290#, I can put a lot of force into a knife thrust or slash!

Thanks for the info.

The Kraton handle one is just the USMC with a different sheath and handle material. Everything else is exactly the same, like blade shape/design and HT.

Same tang.

It extends the entire length of the handle, Kraton or Leather, doesn't matter.

Same size, all the blanks are made the same.

Most of the broken ones are from improper batonning technique. I have broken a few, but I'm pretty hard on knives. I've never broken one in the same year I bought it.

They will fulfill your needs just fine.

All,

The width of the tang on the 1245 (Tanto) and 1271 (Fighter) are wider than the 1211/1217 versions. (0.725" vs. 0.531") This gives the knife a larger (and stronger) tang cross-section. The tang is a full length, narrow tang. It extends the entire length of the handle and the pommel (butt cap) is attached to it.
Hope this helps.

Maybe consider a BK7 if you are that worried about it but still want a KA-BAR? . Just a thought.

Hey fellas. Quick question. I believe I read somewhere that the later gen. KABAR F/Us have radiused inner corners where the handle meets the blade body. Is this true? If it is, then it would almost negate the stress risers of the 'join' wouldn't it? Where did I read this? Damn my sieve-like memory..

None that I have seen.

They stay true to the original specs, with deviation only in modern materials.

Damn, necro'd a 4 year old thread....:D

Well since it's already dug up. I don't think the WW2 drawing depict a radius at the blade/tang junction. At least by 1962 drawings and going forward the spec drawings call for a 1/32" radius.

Nope, no radius on them.

Others may, but the KA-BAR ones are water jetted to a tight......90 degrees. :D
