I'm looking for a small camp axe and came across the kabar hatchet.Does anyone have any experience with it and if so what are your thoughts?

I just love hearing people who may have an opinion about one blade condemn an entire company like that: it's a sure sign they don't know what they are talking about.

Ka-Bar is an old and reputable company that has been producing good cutlery for over a century. It's not always the prettiest, but it's always good, tough stuff at a reasonable price.

I've never used the Ka-Bar hatchet, so I can't say how good it is. My guess would be that it's a decent hatchet for a good price. Perhaps others who are more knowledgeable than I will weigh in with better info.

actually i EDC a ka bar mule folder , plain edge tanto blade. some days i carry a small plain edge TDI , these are good knives. i`ve previously owned another two ka bars , which were good as well.

Then I misunderstood you, and owe you an apology. It's happened before that someone trashes an entire company and their line of products based on their own view of one single piece of equipment... whether they've actually used that company's equipment or not.

As far as the hatchet that the OP asked about, I really don't know. It doesn't seem to be my cup of tea (the stacked leather handle, for instance, wouldn't be my first choice), but I've never used it myself, so I can't rate it. I don't think anyone could rate it based on showing a knife with a similar handle, which is what bothered me about your initial post. Apparently you weren't trashing Ka-Bar as a company, so I'm a little puzzled about where you were coming from.

thats ok mate , appology accepted. i haven`t played with one of those particular hatchets either , but being a stacked leather handle i doubt the tang would be very substantial or very strong , especially for an impact tool such as a hatchet . stacked leather seems to be more for show then anything else. lets face it , you get what you pay for. the mule folder is a tank :) the small TDI can be useful for EDC , and not just for SD either.
