Hey spyder10 just thought I tell you the little bit I know, the kama was a pretty basic weapon for the samurai for a long long time. In fact one of the prettiest places in Japan where you can see the giant buddha is named kamakura after its founder buried his kama in the ground to designate the area his own. Kamas are everywhere in japan, if you take a walk around the neighborhood little old ladies are wielding them whacking away at weeds and grass. Kamas are sold in every hardware store in japan. You can even buy a folding kama in a hard ware store that looks like a giant spyderco harpy. Anybody that lives or has lived in japan will back this up. As a weapon they were used historically as a defensive weapon. By this I mean the samurai or poorer folk who couldnt afford to buy a sword would trap and bind and sweep the blade. It is hard to imagine the level of skill needed to do that. They were often used with a chain attached to the kama's handle butt, the chain was used to wrap the sword blade then the blade was yanked and the kama user would come in for a slashing attack. Oh no did I say slash? What is a more sensitive word for slash? I can almost hear all the gentle posters here protesting this description as being too violent and worrying what other people are going to think about their knife hobbies. Anyway today the kama is found in okinawan karate forms used as a paired weapon. Ninjutsu teaches the historical use of this weapon as well, in Japanese culture whenever a fighter is shown in a story using a kama he is understood to be a Ninja, sorry to use the word ninja, that is a self esteem reducer for a lot of folks to I understand. You have to conform and say things just so on these forums if you want to be accepted or even make it onto somone's good list so be real carefull spyder10 and dont get too imaginative, imagination is bad, people will write bad things about you.
