hi,

those of you who own or have handled a C84 Karambit...is this knife useable for everyday utility stuff like opening enveloppes and such, or does it only "snag 'n grab" ?

thx

dennis

PS. any links to reviews on this knife would be most appreciated as well.

I highly recommend the Dodo for utility use. I guess you could use the Karambit but they are more intended for a specialized self defense application. The Dodo has much more versatility and is much easier to maintain. Also in a pinch the Dodo would not be a bad self defense weapon.
Not taking anything away from the Karambit. It is a great knife in it's own rite. But the Dodo is the king of the utility knives. :)

thanks JD, i read your post on Spyderco.com already ;)

anyway, the Dodo isn't really my thing. i like how the Karambit looks and was just wondering how versatile it was......

denn :D

havent had a spydie kerambit but have had a bladetech model, didnt like the design myself, limited utility use also,

I saw this question come up at another forum so I figured I'd see for myself. I chose one of the kerambits in my accumulation and carried it all day, using it for any and all chores that came up.

I used it to open holiday packages of cardboard and plastic, including a Hickory Farms gift box.

I used it to cut up and eat the contents of the gift box.

I used it to open plastic blister-packs containing other knives.

I used it to open several packages I received in the mail.

I used it to cut up and break down those boxes when I was done emptying them.

I used it to open all the envelopes I received.

When all was said and done the kerambit performed well and did everything any other utility knife I carry has done on a given day. I think choosing the kerambit is a style choice more than anything; certainly this is a fun blade with a lot of personality.

(modern) karambits in general should do for normal utility, the spydie karambit, however, will probably not be your first choice for utility.

see also my posts in the "karambit - full of surprises" thread. If you can't find it, search for "Ookami" since I sign my each&every post with it.

Ookami

ps see, I did it again :D

I'd consider the Spyderco Kerambit a "modern" one. Wouldn't you?

Like I said, it will perform utility functions just fine. There's nothing it can't do that another knife can, unless you want the curved blade to do something for which only a straight blade is good.

Im thinking Ookami meant the stlye of the blade. Modern meaning a less radical curvature on the blade, like the Emerson you have. Traditionally, the karambit blade is radically curved to almost point straight forward when held in the hand (like the curve on the c84).

Im gonna be getting one in the passaround in early January. Ill be posting a review in the passaround forum when Im done with it. I think so far only 2 members got to use it and no one has posted a review yet but that may change. By the end January, Im sure there will be some review up. Check the passaround forum then.

:) thanks for all your input. my impression now is that it isn't the best choice, but it works.....that's basically all i needed to know. because i was mainly concerned about snagging onto materials.

i'm considering getting one since i like the looks, and i like Spydies.

thx again, you've been a great help! :)
