I was curious as to which particular brand, produces quality, lanterns, that are still serviceable. I know I recall hearing positive things about Dietz Lanterns, and V&O, but I'm not totally certain which Kerosene, burning lantern, would be top tier, in say the sub 100 dollar range. I don't know too terribly much about them, but want a traditional Cold Blast lantern, that's traditionally styled, and capable of serving me well if I needed it in a power outage, or black out, really, it's just for my enjoyment mostly, and a functional decoration.

Yup, that is the go-to site for lanterns. I've got a couple of the Feuerhand lanterns stashed away for hurricane weather. If you haunt junk stores, you can sometimes find good American made lanterns in the less than $100 range.

I have two Dietz lanterns for power outages, and I am happy with them. As a side note, make sure you buy "Odorless" lamp oil. I mistakenly purchased a bottle labeled "Non Odorless" and I can tell you that "Non Odorless" means - "This s@#$ stinks!!"

Thanks for the link. I think I'm going to order a couple of the emergency oil lamp kits. I've got tons of flashlights and a big LED lantern for power outages, but I like the idea of a oil lantern better.

The Dietzes have been made in China for several years now & are not the same quality as the Feuerhands.
I'd go with the German lanterns if you can find 'em, have three here.

If you go Deitz, go older & US-made.
Have two of those.

I have a Chinese Air Pilot and US Little Wizard.... both are large fount lanterns, the Little Wizard has a 5/8" wick and the Air Pilot a 7/8" wick....both ran without a hitch during the 04/05 hurricane season when I had a 7 1/2 day power outage.... noticeable brightness difference in the wick dimension... WT Kirkman does not recommend paraffin lamp oil for wicks larger than 1/2"... I run 1K kerosene, but they work on red dye #1 also... an older KMart Dietz is fueled with Tiki torch oil (citronella).... power out during tropical storm season is hot... you probably will spend a lot of time outside after dark to escape the heat...

relative size comparison

I think I'm gonna try a Feuerhand, I hadn't noticed Dietz being an outsourced product, and am kinda eager to see the quality, exhibited by the Feuerhands. Next question is what is the best fuel to stock up on ? Some are skeptical of non taxed Red dye Kerosene, but some think it's fine.

kerosene is hard to find down here, there are very few mom and pop gas stations that have it on pump anymore ... for 04/05 I paid $10 for a 1 gal can of 1K at Home Depot... I recently got a Sengoku HMN 110 kero heater for backup... red dye #1 in my container was $5 a gallon in St Petersburg.... I ran a tank full of the red dye, and could not notice any difference in the short usage time...I have a couple of spare wicks for each Dietz

I see, yeah, I dunno anywhere in this neck of the woods that has kerosene at the pump. Could be a problem to get, oh well. Not that big of a deal, I guess the whole red dye thing isn't all it's cracked up to be, and fine for general use, I heard it clogged wicks or something, but wicks are cheap.

When I lived North of Huntsville, Alabama, Kerosene was available at the pump at several traditional gas stations and a few convenience stores. Availability really seems to be a regional thing.
