Home Depot and Lowe’s have stopped carrying the 1 gallon cans of kerosene and I am having trouble finding the stuff here in my town. I have heard of people using what they call tool cleaner from tractor supply and I have also heard rumor that guys like Chris Marx have used diesel fuel as flux . Does anyone have any suggestions for a substitute that would be easily obtainable in an urban area

Since kerosene is still used in some small camping heaters and such, you might be able to find jugs of it at a place like Cabelas or Bass Pro. I’m in Canada but I have seen jugs of it at a couple Walmarts I have been to as well.

Belay that request . I found kerosene the commercial fuel depot two blocks away from my shop. It’s been there for 10 years that I’ve been in my shop and I just never bothered to drop by. $7.50 a gallon But I only need a gallon

As you discovered, kerosene is sold at places selling gasoline and diesel fuel. When I need it I buy it at the corner gas station.

Walmart carys it to in the big jugs, well at least thy do here.

Home Depot and Lowe’s no longer carry the cans of kerosene here in Central Florida . The manager at my Home Depot told me that Atlanta told them to ship what they had back to the warehouse. He only had like four cans left so he just gave them away to whoever was looking for kerosene. I was late. As it is pretty warm down here we don’t have much use for kerosene heaters and what have you so very few if you all retailers Carry the stuff .

PSC 1000 Parts Cleaner from tractor supply, it's similar to kerosene, works as well or better for forge welding. Comes in 5 gallon cans.

The closest Tractor Supply location that I know of is 40 miles away. Good thing I found that kerosene two blocks away from me.;)

I was wondering if just mineral spirits would work. Wouldn't that be about the "cleanest" form of hydrocarbon readily available? If parts cleaner works, lots of them seem to be mostly mineral spirits.
