Kershaw Blur in s30v or 14C28N steel(s)?

Hey everyone,
Well I have been getting more and more interested in Kershaw/ZT. I purchased a ZT 0350 3 months ago for myself and a pink Chive a few months before for my Mom. Both are doing great (although I just broke my ZT's torsion bar ), but my "knife addiction" is overwhelming and I need a fix so I am thinking about adding a Blur. :D

In my search for "my" blur I have become interested in the s30v and 14C28N steel blur(s). I am a bit of a s30v fan but I wouldn't mind trying something else. I have done a little research on 14C28N and it seems interesting, plus I really like the red handle.

My problem isn't which to pick or what is better and all that nonsense but regarding the price. I found a s30v blur for about $70 and the 14C28N for $60. To me that seems a little low for s30v; did I find a steal or is that the usual price?

Thanks for the help,

_Czech

That's about the usual price, maybe a few dollars less than what the river store sells them for.

If you don't mind getting a blem, Dave (kershawguy) sells them for $49

You can find the 14c28n blurs for $40-$50 from a few places. Kershawguy is a good source, seen his tanto blurs for $30 and the regular pe for a little under $40. Not sure about his red ones.

I say try the sandvik steel for sure.

Thanks for all the help, this is good stuff.

I am curious then, if the $70 is a pretty normal price for the s30v blur then is the 14C28N over priced? I would assume that there would be a little more than $10 dollars between those two steels.

I will definitely consider buying from kershawguy.

Any more info/help is greatly appreciated.

I would say no not really. Both steels are good steels. There's a thread around here somewhere about which is better; opinions differ on the answer.

Alright, I was just curious since both knives are the same (except the blade steel) that it would be a bigger difference. I had heard that 14C28N was a good steel, I think I read the thread you are talking about. I have 2 knives in s30v so it would be kind of nice to have something different; plus the red handle is pretty cool. :p

I prefer 14c28n. According to kershaws steel chart (http://www.kershawknives.com/knifetech.php?feature_id=71&brand=kershaw) 14C28N has a higher RC hardness. Try the 14C28N and if you don't like it, sell it or trade it.

Higher hardness doesn't mean much in this case. The S30V Blur will hold it's edge much, much longer than the 14C28N version. Also, I seriously doubt that they are running their S30V that soft.

About the only thing 14C has over S30V is ease of sharpening, and attainable sharpness. It can get amazingly sharp, but it won't hold it nearly as long as S30.

I buy my 14C28N Blurs from eBay auction. I've paid $45, $38, $38, and $38. If you select "Show Only Completed Listings", you can see what they end up going for. I see one sold for $32 on July 3. There is usually about $4 shipping on top of those prices.

I select "Buying Format Auction" and "Condition New". Also, I'll do a search with text like "kershaw blur -tanto -rescue -serrated -tactical" because I don't want the tanto, rescue, or serrated blades.

Don't tell anybody, this will be our little secret.
