I have searched for information about the damascus steel used in the Kershaw damascus range but can't really find anything useful.

Can anyone give me some information about this steel?

I'd like to know if it is carbon or stainless damascus and what its properties are compared with the standard stainless used in the Skyline.

Here is what Alabama Damascus said about their Carbon Steel Damascus.

Mike

The steel is made from the following:

We use (3) layers of 52100, (4) layers of 5160, (3) layers of 203E, and (3)
layers of 15N20.

The steel is forged out and folded 5 times to give you 416 layers.

The leeks are made from a random pattern. Brad told me that Kershaw is
about to release a knife made from our ladder pattern steel.

Thanks

IMO, it's a little hard to compare properties of 4 layered steels to a single steel.

Ya know something 3G. I have no idea what this stuff is?
I'll look it up but there has to be a better way. Like a Damascus primer.

5160 spring steel
203E low carbon high impact High nickel mild steel alloy
52100 ball bearing steel
15N20 band saw blade material

3G, your Google-fu is obviously superior to mine :D
I've been trying to decide whether to buy a Skyline damascus, and I think this info has helped me decide to just go for the regular model.
I guess damascus is more for show than practical use.
I'm sure it would still be a good user, but for an edc blade it appears that the standard stainless would be more sensible.

Thanks for your help :)

Many manufactures offer blades that consist of a high quality steel core laminated with damascus.

You get the best of both worlds, superior edge, with great looks.

Using A DMT blue I can get an edge on in seconds. Putting a new bevel on it is easier than stainless steels in the 154cm/VG10 class. Definitely easier than S30V/D2. It takes a nice sharp edge too, like a carbon steel should.

I haven't given it any real hard use of note to report on. It cuts as it should with no problems noted opening packages, cutting blister packs, and stuff for the recycle bin. It reminds me of Case CV in performance and edge taking. Joe

I own a damascus Skyline. I love it! Out of the box, it was the sharpest knife I've ever owned. It was like a light saber when I cut through paper, and even thin cardboard. It's really easy to sharpen too. I also own a Bradley Kimura with a 13C26 blade. The Skyline holds an edge much better in my opinion. The Kimura blade seems to be softer than the damascus Skyline. Besides, the damascus is beautiful. Imo, For the extra $10, I think it's worth the extra money to get the damascus. Good luck on your purchase. I'm sure you will be happy with either one.
