I spotted this little gem a few months ago at a local knife store and went back and bought it today. The owner fancies carrying knives that are not as easy to find. I picked up a Sakai Bird and Trout knife, and now this. It's a Kershaw KAI made in Japan of course. My questions are:

1) What type of steel is the blade?
2) I believe the stag is real due to discoloration which appears natural but my eye for this is undeveloped as of yet. Is the stag real?
3) How long ago did these become unavailable?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

I asked the owner some questions but he knows little of the origins, details, etc. On one side it says Kershaw Portland, Oregon and on the other it says kai JAPAN 4200

Here are some pics. Thanks in advance.

Off topic he was also showing me a Spyderco Jess Horn model with Jess Horn imprinted on the FRN and a gold scarab on the clip. He said it was a pretty rare one to find.

GFarrell3, that is an oldie for sure.

The 4200 "Big Joe" was started up in 1983 and was discontinued in 1998. The cataloged Big Joe had wood scales and a leather sheath. AUS-8 was the steel of choice for this knife.
There were non-cataloged versions of which you look to be the proud new owner of one. Stag and bone were the usual materials used, but a natural material was seemingly always incorporated with the scales of these non-cataloged knives.
Nice rare find. Hope that helps.

Man, that sure is a sweeeet looking knife. What great fit at the liners, backspring, and scales!

Congrats

Thanks a million it definitely helps. The fit and finish as well as the lockup on this one is unreal. Blade sits dead center but the pic was lousy. I like the large nail nick as it just about lets me open it one-handed with the thumb. I'll get smoother at it with time. Thanks again.
