Hey guys, my third thread and i barely joined.....this is getting addicting!

My "house" knife just broke and by house knife i mean just a knife that i carry around the house for simple use, not really a EDC knife but if i wanted to i could. Im wanting something light, under 3 3/4 inches, slim, and these both seem to fit the bill. The Salvo has a steel called Damascus steel which i have never worked with before and the Blur has Sandvik 13C26 stainless-steel which i have also never used. I was hoping that someone could help me out here with both steels, tell me there cons and pros. A picture comparing the two would be great also if you have one!

Thanks

Well Damascus is strips of different steel heated then beat together then treated to acid to expose it's pattern.

Also, the Blur upgraded to 14cn28 steel, which is more rust resistant.

No idea on what Kershaw's composition of Damascus is though.

Depending on exact composition, either steel could outperform each other.

the blurs have been made with many, many different steels over the years, and you can still find them depending on how much you want to pay.

I'd recommend the standard red blur if money is an issue. it's a true classic. almost every production collector has owned one over the years.

my personal favorite is the orange cpm-154 model

one day I'll buy one and frankenblur it out with one of the CB bladed models...

Found an offer that was really good it was the Scallion.
Artfully Martial- I really wanted the blur inred but i couldnt find it under 50 :(

The damascus on the Kershaw knives is excellent, but it will rust ifot cared for. The Blur is a great knife, but the 13C26 steel is not necessarily as good as the damascus. Also, buy your knife from a knife dealer. Tue chances that you get a better finished knife is higher. Amazon is basically a drop ship company, you may end up with a onife that someone returned because of some flaw. Just a thought.

My advice to you is to get the knife you really want. That might require saving for another month or something, but at least you'll be satisfied.

Look for used Blurs on the exchange twice a day. Blurs are extremely common, and I'll bet you can find a like-new one in your price range.

If you want to keep the cost down, an entry level Kershaw I love is the Kershaw storm:

these usually go for $35 and use a similar steel to the Blurs and the Salvo, as I recall...

not assisted, but it has a framelock and the same trac-tec inserts. Also, it has a flipper, so it doesn't really need to be assisted anyway.

I figured it would do good for a house knife...you think?
I have a cold steel Espada and a zero tolerance for edc so that wasn't my concern.
I knew the steel wasnt the best but I think it will work.
Once I get enough money I'm gonna get the blur s30v

Around the house, cutting tape, opening letters, should be fine. Plus you can sharpen it in like 30 seconds so long as it isn't all chipped out. My high-school ex-girlfriend still uses hers now...9 years later

Yea I gotcha
9 years!?!? She must take care of the little knife.

lol, i bought her and her sister one...some years ago. maybe it wasn't quite 9 years ago. But it seems like it was my senior year in high school...maybe my freshman year in college.

Anyway, she EDCs a tanto minigrip, so it's a secondary knife for her.

Just sharpened her Scallion last week actually.

Ive never know a woman to carry a tanto lol
That's pretty cool...
I've been looking into tanto blades but they seem more for self defense then utility.

It's odd. Both my first serious girlfriend AND my second, with no prodding from me, both desired and bought tanto minigrips. The only difference was the first one had OD scales and the second had black scales. Instead of buying the second one a Scallion, I bought her a Benchmite.

Eventually, I bought the first girlfriend's husband a blue minigrip with the old oval spyderhole and 154cm. His wife's minigrip is so old it has 440C in it. I sharpened his mini grip too, which now is heavily chipped out and has no tip lol.

The tanto shape is fine, but it's clearly derived from a weapon, although the American interpretation is pretty loose. There are some interesting applications of it though, like you can use that second point (not the tip) to slice paper on a desk or something quite precisely.

I pretty much only carry recurves these days though.

What's your main edc?

I switch between my titanium tyrade, either my blue or green titanium bumps (usually the green though), and depending on the situation, maybe I'll carry my blue ripple or even an 0400 if I'm feeling adventurous. So generally, the tyrade or the green bump.

I think I only own three non-recurved folders now...the ripple, the mudd and the gravitator....hmm...I'm counting the dodo as a recurved folder though.
