Looking for a new kettle or pot. One for all. I would like it to be able to used on a esbit stove, alcohol, emberlit, canister, and hang over a fire or on the coals in the fire. I have narrowed down my search. I am looking to be able to boil water for 1-2 mountain house meals and a hot bev. Backpack ready.

GSI Kettle in Stainless. I have the haulist but want a stainless. They are safer and hold up better than aluminum. Plus no rubber handles. Thoughts on this please.

Evernew Pot #3 (Rubber coated handles might be an issue but can be cut off if I dont like them.

MSR Stowaway 1.6 quart or 1.1 quart:

Primus LiTech Kettle (dont like the plastic handles...might not do well in a fire.

Mors Bush Pot...just dont like aluminum! Handle hinges make this one something that would be hard to store in a nylon pack for it could cut your gear!

This is what I use. It has the same type handle as the LiTech Kettle but has not been a problem on my gas stove, Emberlit or campfire. One thing to consider is if the pot/kettle/billy shape allows you to use it as storage for compact packing. Mine will hold a cannister, stove and a few odds and ends like dishcloth, scrub pad and fire kit.

i don't like kettles - you can eat out of them in a pinch but it's a hassle to clean too in a regular basis so i only see them as strictly a water boiler.

Hate to say it I think I might need a very good pot for certain types of camping and a good kettle for other. If I stick with dehydrated in the bag meals a kettle is fine! If I need to make something actually in a pot like rice or what not then I think and evernew is good. What do you guys take with to clean your pots? GSI scraper??

Both ....
I cook food in my pot and brew tea in my kettle

I carry a small pad of closed cell ensolite foam and wrap either the pot or the kettle to keep them warm
So I heat my cooking pot to boiling and take it off the stove, turn off the stove to save fuel
And let the pot cook in the foam (this is called Hay Box cooking in Scouts)
I cook lentil, rice and pasta and this is a great way to cook.
Also hot oatmeal cooks well this way

The same with my tea kettle.
I boil water, brew tea, and wrap it in the thin foam, which keeps the tea hot for quite some time
There is nothing quite like it sipping hot tea in a cool evening

My halulite is wide. It also has a wide opening so it isnt too bad to get into. It is aluminum so it has the leaching issue. I wish GSI made a titanium version. Ti conducts heat almost as well as aluminum yet is stronger and lighter. It also is harder and does not leach. It is easier to clean as well. Kettle cooking in it is pretty good I did Mikhail (at emberlits) egg omelet yesterday and then used the water for coffee. It worked well.

I looked at the MSR Stowaway and didnt like it much. It is heavy, big and the handle design seems awkward. LiTech looks like it has a narrower opening as well as plastic handles. With all that said I am leaning towards the GSI kettle in stainless as the Evernew.

I have an MSR 1.6 stow away incoming, I ordered it based on reviews. I did not want to spring for ti and wanted something sturdy enough to not get mangled in the pack.

I've seen people use the New Wave Enviro stainless steel food container to great effect as a pot.

If you really want stainless kettle / pot, then have you have looked at the MSR Alpine teapot?
It's 1L capacity that you can actually fill to the brim (unlike my GSI Halulite which only takes 600ml before the spout overflows) and the lid is wide enough to cook through (again the GSI is a bit narrow.)

I have both MSR stowaway's. they are great. The handle works perfectly. They poor well without dribbling. Easy to clean. Easy to store things inside. When they are sooty, I can clip one to the outside of my pack without fear of it opening.

I got a small kettle and pot instead of either\or. My thinking was make some tea for the warden and myself and be warm with that then heat up food. Soon as the kettle boils toss the food pot on. That's were I'm at now. Who knows were I'll be with more time and experience. But I figure that I can't be too far off right now if the units are small and meet out current needs.

If it's one or the other, a pot is the no-brainer choice, imo.

A pot can do anything a kettle can do, but a kettle can't do everything a pot can.

Try a mucket. It has a lot more options for use over a campfire. No plastic or rubber parts and is much cheaper than most. The bay has em.
