Kevlar for knife handle?

Are there knife handles made from para-aramid/epoxy composite materials? How would a material like that perform in a knife handle compared to a material like carbon fiber for an example?

Also, how expensive would that be compared to other materials?

I have some kevlar, that i thought about making a micarta out of, similar to the blue jean micarta, but kevlar instead.

I had a whole box of kevlar sock

its almost like a fire hose but just a single weave

it was from when i worked at schlumberger

In my experience there are a whole lot better substrates to work with.

Kevlar is difficult to cut in cloth form and even worse as a laminate. Kevlar in composite form is hell to grind.

(Apparently) It can be done, but at an increased cost in patience and sandpaper.

I would try to bust up some G10 to see if it was tough enough for the application before working with kevlar.:D

I'm not a knifemaker, but I've used kevlar in kayaks and canoes. The problem boatbuilders run into with kevlar is that the kevlar fabric fuzzes when it is sanded instead of sanding clean like carbon fiber and fiberglass. You could go over it with more epoxy or whaever you used to bond the fabric together, then sand that smooth, but it would probably be noticeably more work than carbon fiber. I don't know how it would compare to homemade micarta made with other fabrics.

My friend Chuck Bybee got ahold of a bunch of kevlar pieces awhile back and several of us tried it out. It did not work well at all.

Just as has been stated, it frayed badly. You could not get a nice solid finish on it.

The idea was cool, but in application it sucked.
