Kitchen knife templates

Murray Carter's book "101 knife designs" has lots of designs, including kitchen knives. He is one of the most highly regarded makers of kitchen knives, so you can be sure the designs are sound.

dcknives we can be grateful to for posting templates for us newbies to use. However, for a chef knife his template uses 1.5" stock and that is a bit narrow for a chef type knife. Still would be a good place to start but I would modify it for 2" stock myself.

It's also worth mentioning that photographs of knives can be used as templates. I will download a good picture of a knife, size it appropriately, and trace it off of my computer screen. This is great for studying designs, as a starting point for new designs, and as a source of designs when you are starting out. Especially for a beginner, there is no shame in copying a design as long as you don't plan on selling it. If it is from a custom maker, it is polite to ask for their permission first.

You can also use the draw application of openoffice (free) which has measurement scales as well that you can make templates from and then scale them appropriately.

Many Many times I will copy a photo of a knife I see online to my hard drive, then go to resizr.com to resize it to the correct dimensions. Then a paper and pencil to trace on the screen. I do wish there were more templates available online, especially kitchen knives, because I suck in the design department. Way too analytical to be right brained!

If any one needs a particular template based from a photo I would be happy to create it for you, just shoot me an email

Welcome ddawg17. This thread is 10 years old, so you won't get answers directly from some of the chaps.
Fill out your profile so we know a bit about you and where you live.

One good way to get template ideas is to look at the knives in The Exchange and in the Knifemakers Gallery. Other good sources are to do a search online for "kitchen knife profiles". I just did that and got hundreds of profiles.

The Custom Search engine in the stickys will help you find threads on specific topics here in Shop Talk. Look at the dates of the OP and last few posts o see if it is current or old before posting on it. If you have a question, start a new thread and link the old one. The stckys have a lot of good info in them for new makers.
