Kitchen Knives: Shun vs. Kanetsune

I've heard a lot of hype about the Shun lately and I was considering getting their wood block set found here on knifeworks.com http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=KSKOBLOCK7

Then, I stumbled upon knifesupplycompany.com and saw Kanetsune's line of Japanese knives that look similar to the Shun line... found here http://www.knifesupplycompany.com/kitchen-cutlery-kanetsune.html

My question is to whoever owns either of these blades - or better yet both - and I was wondering if one is "better" than the other or just general opinions about them, especially the Kanetsune.

Also, I have to mention that I get 50% off of the SHUN retail price directly from Kershaw since I'm in the military. So, it would make that set of the first link around $550 or so... so, that's swaying my opinion...

Thanks,
Ryan

There are a number of knives similar to the Kanetsune. They are called western style Japanese knives. As for the Kershaw, they have a good reputation but a lot of people don't think that buying a set of knives is a good idea. It seems that you very often get a lot of knives that you will never use. Check out the kitchen knives forum at knifeforums.com or foodieforums.com. You will probably find a lot more information there just because they specialize in kitchen knives.

That is very good advice, buy the knives that you need. Some akers make some models better than others. I think that out of a dozen knives in my kitchen only two of them match.

Wow... oddly enough this never occurred to me. So, let me ask you this. If I'm not really experienced in kitchen knives, but want the "best" off the bat, would that set be bad for the price I can get the Shun at? Without being in the kitchen yet, how do you know? I ask this pre-marriage and my girlfriend and I were pretty excited to here about the discount.

What knives do you guys use the most?

Thanks,
Ryan

4" paring, 6" slicer ,8" chef's knives are the most usefull to me. I have the similar agrussell white handled knives. The Kershaws have curved handles which I would not be happy with but I think they have other handles too. Whichever ones you pick they are very fine knives well made excellent VG-10 steel core.Much nicer than my old Henckels. They're keepers !!!
