Guys & Gals,
I am looking to upgrade/add to some of my kit and am looking hard at these brands. One question I have regards boiling water in the Kleen Kanteen bottles- I was thinking of replacing one of my Nalgene bottles with this and ditching my small pot in my light rig. Will the Kleen Kanteen hold up to boiling water.
Also interested in hearing from anyone using the Zebra brand 18-10 stainless pots as to quality and satisfaction in use. Looking at the billy pot and multifunction steamer pot. This is for the heavier kit.

Thanks,

Zebra stuff is pretty good. I have a couple pots I use while car camping. Had them for over 10 years.

I don't know much about Kleen Kanteen, but Zebra is quite good. My MSR pots are made by Zebra and have been in service for 15+ years, high qualty and tough.

The Klean Kanteen website states that their bottles can be used to boil water in a pinch. One just needs to remove the cap so it doesn't melt, and also take precautions to not burn oneself.

I carry a Kleen Kanteen now just for this versatility. Guyot Designs also makes a few stainless steel 'jars'. These are of a heavier guage ss than the Klean Kanteens, and A guy at KnifeForums did a review where he used one to boil water next to an open flame.

That Gayut looks nice!! Like that squishy bowl too.

I want to be sure this will hold up to repeated use. I don't "intend" to get stuck out and have to use it but I do intend to test it thouroughly before adding it to the kit. It will replace the GI Canteen cup for boiling water. The Gayut appears to have a little heavier wall & would give me a little more durability.

Thanks,

I have a Zebra pot and its great, the main reason I got it was for the bail handle, much easier to cokk with it on a camp rire then an MSR titan pot. Yes it is a little heavy but I dont mind having a heavier pot because if I'm out enjoying myself I like to eat decent food.

I have a large and small Kleen Kanteen bottles with loop tops. It seems to me, though I have not tried it, that they would hold up to repeated boilings. I would not do this engulfed in flame but over a nice bed of coals. You could also use some wire(I carry snare wire in my kit) to wrap around the lip of the KK bottle so as not to burn yourself.

I have a very good local outdoor store that carries the Kleen Kanteen, they can hardly keep them in stock.

I have a few of the Zebra mugs/lids to include the nice little Billy plus a couple Kleen Kanteen bottles and both the short and large Guyot bottles. The Guyot's are more robust than the Kleen Kanteen bottles, but both will do double duty to boil water. The Guyot bottles will also nest in all the Nalgene-sized cups. I'm still doing some personal evaluations compared to Nalgene bottles, but having a single-wall stainless water bottle that can also be used to boil water in (for expedient water purification) makes good sense. Unfortunately, I still like to have a nesting cup/mug, so I'm trying to find the best combination for different activies (day-hiking, climbing, backpacking, work, etc.).

I really like the Zebra Billy can/mug, but I wish the bail would fold down under the bottom and lock the lid on place...as is, it either is packed with the bail straight up (takes up too much room) or on the side, where it sticks out too much for economical storage. I already emailed the Zebra company with my suggestion, but haven't heard anything. I love the size, small inner bowl and locking lid with the bail handle, nice thought out little all-in-one cooking mug/cup.

I also have a couple of Civil War replica pieces (made out of heavy duty tin); one is a bill can with tilting lid and the other is a large "mucket" for car/truck camping. The small one is great despite the authentic-look to it.

I need to take some pictures and post them this weekend...

i spend much of my time between bf and the hoodlums site. if you check there under the wilderness cooking someone did a great write up about the idea with lots of pics. it convinced me to pick up a guyot and i really like mine.

I've seen a Zebra Billy can/mug with a flexible wire bail. Something like wire leader for toothy fish critters in stainless. I have a 10cm on order now and am looking forward to delivery and trying it out.

So, I just got in my order of the Guyot Standard 38oz bottle and a nesting GSI Alpine cup. WORKS GREAT!!! Not metallic taste, I've had a few Sigg's that I could definitely taste copper in. Now, the shameless plug for awesome customer service, www.bepreparedtosurvive.com. While I realize it kinda sounds like a fringe company, these guys and girls are great. The downside is you can't shop at 2 A.M., as you have to call in to order. The good news is you get to talk Denise, a sweet Swiss lady with an awesome accent. Even better news is it's a one stop shop for hardcore gear (GSI and Guyot set). They also sell most of the stuff we're always saying that we love on here. OHT's, Farmers, Candlelanterns, you get the idea. The best part? Everything ships Priority Mail. I placed my order on Thursday, it's in my hand Monday morning.

Now, about the cup and bottle. These are great. Thick enough, sturdy as hell, they are definitely going to become cooking gear and get EDC'ed in my bag to work. Pair it up with on of the Gription things (that all the local outdoors shops sell), and I think it's going to get used all day. Another thing, in searching for this Guyot bottle, I found a lot of sites talking about how Bisephnol A is giving us cancer, and all. Whether it's true or not, I don't care. BUT, an added bonus is that this is Surgical Stainless steel. Theoretically it should be the perfect water bottle, and IMHO I believe it is.
