Hey guys. Let me start by saying I'm not much of a maker. I do however have a high stress job and find it quite relaxing to tinker and put handles on knives. It started when a knife I had broke the handle and I replaced it with g10. Came out nice and I wanted to get a little better.
So what I'm wondering is if any of the knife blanks found on Amazon or etsy are decent. I've found some that claim to be VG10 but just wanted an opinion. Also is there anywhere to find some really good blanks?
Thanks,
Blake

Blake, I've done a few and they are fun to do, and pretend I'm a real knife maker! We use this one all the time, that claimed to be VG10, and haven't needed to sharpen it yet.

Not sure if you like puukkos, but Laurin Metalli makes a bunch of low cost, high quality carbon and stainless blades. Do a search and you will find the retailers.

Some of the knife making supply websites sell blanks I’d be more likely to trust than random ones from Amazon or eBay.

I the Dexter Russel kits look fun.

Also there are Enzo/Brisa blanks that can be had to build up. I think GeofS GeofS has one he did a nice job on, if memory serves.

I second this. Also various manufacturers make skeleton knives that you can put scales on. I've done skeleton knives, blanks from knife supplies retailers, and even some Spyderco Mules.

At woodcraft stores they carry several brands of blanks. One is a Japanese brand that has Damascus with a VG10 core at 62 hardness. It holds a very good edge.

Here is the brand, but not the exact knife I was talking about.

The Lauri blanks are great. Polish them, or don't. Clean them up, or don't. A variety of sizes and shapes are available from various places. I've bought blanks from Ragweed Forge before. Now I make my own (for better or worse).

Thank you all so much for your replies! I will look into those!
I'm sure I'll have more questions but for now, I'm gonna start tinkering!

What's funny to me is that Zhen is a Chinese name/word, not Japanese. Hashishiin Hashishiin
