Knife Buck 110 vs Case Hammerhead Lockback

Case has made those for a long time. I had and still have a couple before I ever had a 110.
Both of the ones that I have were brand new in the box when I got them and both came with blade play in every direction but most noticibly side to side. Not a bad knife, but far from being a favorite of mine. Case also makes a similar one the size of a 112 I believe called the Mako.

I've got a Hammerhead, and while it's seen no real world use, I can say it's a fine knife, with that being said the F&F was no better or worse than any Buck I've owned, and the blade steel is considerably softer, I much prefer the 420 Buck uses to that of Case's Tru-Sharp. Still a fine knife by all means, but a tad bit more ornate than an old 110 or 112.

Do you think Case's Tru-Sharp is really 440A?

I've read (somewhere on Blade Forum) that it's acually 420HC but lacks the heat treament (Bos) that makes Buck's 420HC what it is.

Thank you! Buck 110 is way less expensive and I am not into the fancy colors of the Case. I am not a 110 collector, but I am a Buck accumulator.:D

I have some case lockbacks,I have one that is like a buck selector ,it has a few different blades. The steel takes a good edge but doesn't last any amount of time ,no comparison to buck 420 hc in my opinion.

I wouldn't call this a "fancy" color. It (the Hammerhead) has scales made of some synthetic. It may be phenolic, the same as is used on most of Buck's 100 series fixed blades.

Over all it's nice (except for the blade wobble) and is both lighter and thinner than the 110. I do like the way the handle rivets are flush with the handles, you can't even feel them.

Specs:

110 (2 dot)--- 7.66 oz. and .635" thick

Hammerhead- 7.31 oz. and .495" thick

I've owned a lot of Case knives, and have always been happy with them, but they have all been older knives. I have never had one of those THOUGH. I think the thing that really kept me from buying one was the looks. The Buck is a much nicer looking knife imho.

I agree as I do not like the Case jagged look. I like the Buck rounded look better.

Thanks, you have excellent pics showing the difference.

I bought a Hammerhead from Bass Pro Shops about 2 years ago and while I still have it, I never carry it. I was disappointed in Case's fit & finish and the ergos of the Hammerhead are not as good as the 110.

Can't comment on the Hammerhead but can on the Tru-Sharp.

As others have noted, it is reportedly 420HC at a softer Rc than Buck's.

What I can say more definitively is that it feels much softer in use. When sharpening, it produces a burr much easier and cleaning up the burr takes noticeably more work. New burr just reforms easily in the other direction. The so-called wire edge. Feels closer to Victorinox Inox in this regard.

On the cutting block, it dulls faster than my Buck 420HC.

Thank you for the info.
