GuruShaun: Welcome to Vermont. Where are you going to be living? Not many of us on this forum.

Check the NRA website and Bernard R. Levine's website for more exact info on gun an knife laws in Vermont. Don't take this as the gospel. Check with authorities for more specific information.

Generally, however, you may carry concealed or openly a gun or a knife without a permit unless you do so with intent to harm. You can't carry a weapon on land or building that is a "state institution" You can't carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a vehicle (no prohibition against a handgun). You cannot possess a "zip gun" or a "switchblade". Of course, any federal laws also apply.

Thanks for the quick reply Shann, I'll be located in Springfield, where are you?

Cheers

Shaun

Certain liberties may not apply to you if you're not an American Citizen, or even a Vermont Resident... remember to keep that in mind during your inquiries.

i lived in vermont for 8 monthes last year, and my experince was that the government of the state is run by a bunch of tree huggin hippies. those are the implants from new york and Mass. For the most part the locals tend to be very nice and wonderful people. the tree huggers tend to the minority, but they act like the majority. Carrying and owning guns tends to be alright.

The Connecticut River, from Springfield, VT, to Claremont, NH has some of the finest Tiger Muskie fishing found anywhere!!

For great turkey hunting cross the river into Charlestown and you'll find superb gobblers.

As for firearm/knife carry laws, there are few to none in Vermont. You do not need a permit to carry a firearm and that's one of the reasons their crime rate is so low.

The only Vermont gun laws are that you can't carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a motor vehicle (that's a Fish and Game violation). Of course, all Federal laws such as not carrying a firearm onto Federal property still apply.

The knife laws elude me at the moment, but go the the Vermont state website, go to the statutes section, and check Title 13 (these are the criminal laws and procedures statutes) and do a quick search or knife laws. You should be able to et all the info you need. I'll check the statutes myself a little later today to refresh my own memory.

And yes, welcome to Vermont. ;)

§ 4013. Zip guns; switchblade knives

A person who possesses, sells or offers for sale a weapon commonly known as a "zip" gun, or a weapon commonly known as a switchblade knife, the blade of which is three inches or more in length, shall be imprisoned not more than ninety days or fined not more than $100.00, or both. (1959, No. 151, eff. May 5, 1959; amended 1981, No. 223 (Adj. Sess.), § 23.)

Vermont has a law prohibiting silencer posession as well. It was originally a fish/game law, written many moons ago, to stop poachers.

Overall, VT has some of the most reasonable knife laws in the country.
Certainly far more "liberal" (in the technical sense of the word) than just about
anywhere in the Northeast.

The sites already mentioned have detailed info.
