Ok so I've been searching everywhere for a method attaching scales that doesn't involve the threaded barrel. I've seen a few nice looking large shoulder screws with a type of slotted nut. does anyone know what these are called or where to get them? Mcmaster and fastenal haven't provided me with anything that looks like these. As always thanks for the help guys. I appreciate it.

They are called "round slotted nuts", or "slotted round nuts". The only ones I've seen are metric. They seem to be a bit exotic.

Do a search at Fastenal for part# 11508210. Those ones are plain steel and M5. If you aren't familiar with metric measurements, an M5 bolt is around the equivalent of a 3/16th's inch bolt in diameter.

Stainless steel round slotted nuts can be found if you do a Google search for "stainless steel round slotted nuts", but you might have to order from over seas.

Have you thought about using 1/4" stainless steel tubing and flaring it on both sides (into countersunk/chamfered holes on each side)?
