Hi, Just wondering if the Knife kits I've just seen on the knifekits web site are any good?.

Well, they're pretty good if your a knife maker wanting to transition into folding knives, as it gives you a sense of the parts and details, etc.

For normal use, I think it would just be easier to purchase a knife.

Or if you want to just make your own "customized handle"... I have a DDR3-BL kit, decent quality, etc. Certainyl on apar with the more well known commercial makers like Benchmade/Kershaw for basics... Good fit/finish, decent steels/heat treat like Aus-8...

I've put together some of the folders that I used as EDCs, great way to get a unique looking knife. The AUS8 steel held up well. I assembled the the liner lock with our scales when I got the kit. It worked perfectly, parts fit with no problems, liner lock was perfect and didn't need any tweaking. Go for it.

Only problem is that it is addictive. First it's one kit, then another and another.... then I had to try my hand at making knives from scratch. Then it's all downhill from there. Guess how I found out?

You can buy a good knife for less than the kits cost, but it's a lot of fun to build them yourself.

One time years ago I ordered some parts from Knifekits.com and they accidentally shipped me someone elses order by mistake, so along with my parts I received 6 complete folder kits. All of my efforts to contact Knifekits to get them to pay for return shipping so I could send them back the kits failed so I got stuck with them. I say "got stuck with them" because they were absolute JUNK. I never would have wasted my time trying to make them and I ended up throwing most of what was in the kits away, all I kept were the pocket clips.

Now bear in mind that I like Knifekits, so I'm not trying to slam them by calling the folder kits I received JUNK, that's just what they were. I don't remember what kit models they were and I don't know if they are still making/selling them.

Thanks for that, are there any other online company's that sell kits and/or parts for folder folder building?

It depends on which kits you buy from them. The cheap ones are kind of crappy.

The DDR ones are pretty good.

You get what you pay fire. Sounds like the previous poster got the cheap ones.

Thanks guy's for all the input very helpful, I think I might have a crack at making my own folders or at least start off with customizing production ones, much more simple than I thought, (I wont say easy). Can't seem to find any New Zealand made folders out there, anyone seen, got or heard of any?
