Hello all,
I will be traveling to Flagstaff, AZ next week for a little R&R. I usually like to get a blade everywhere I visit to have a memento of my travels and add to the collection. Does anyone know any knife makers / shops around this area? Thanks,
~D

About an hour and a half away in Prescott there is a little known maker named Larry Fuegen. Better get to him before he is discovered. BWAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
Sorry man, couldn't help myself.

I am just outside of Flagstaff but being a hobbyist maker I don't turn out many knives and it is doubtful I would have anything sale-able by next week.

I have heard mention of other makers in the area but have yet to meet any in person. I know there are a number of them in the Phoenix area. The Arizona Knife Collector's Association could probably turn up some names and/or contacts- http://arizonaknifecollectors.org/

Great suggestion, beautiful knives! Unfortunately I do not have the several thousands of dollars that his available pieces are listed for. I usually and in the sub $300 range and I usually go for the knives that are very tough for usage, not some much ornamental.

I have not really explored the AKCA website so I couldn't say what you might find there, I thought you might find contacts for makers who are local to this area. I wish I could name some but have heard only vauge rumors that so and so's friend makes really nice knives or such like.
How long are you going to be in town? It is a great place for outdoor stuff this time of year although it has been a bit windy. It finally quit snowing, hopefully it won't do that again until next winter:rolleyes:

I just rode through there a couple of weeks ago, and stopped at a place called Knife City.

Seems like it was an hour or so outside of town.

I was impressed as hell with the sheer volume of knives in this place in the middle of nowhere.

I myself am 170 miles or so from Flagstaff.

How far away is Scottsdale? Tim Hancock, one of the best knifemakers in the World, lives in Scottsdale.

Never heard of it, do you remember where this place was?

It's west of Flag, down in the desert. Just another "trading post" type stop. I've passed it at least 100 times.

Ok, I think I found it, it's in Holbrook but there appears to be no website. Might have to pop in there some time. Not that I need a knife or anything...

Yep, a trading post type joint, but impressive.

Customs from several makers, and and just about any production knife you can imagine.

I didn't pay any attention to prices though.

I stopped just because I had been reading the signs for 100 miles on my way home from Bob T's shop in Albuquerque and needed to step off the bike for a little while. I was surprised by what I found.

It's not just a run of the mill Trading Post with a handful of junk knives, though they have those as well.

BTW Flagstaff to Scottsdale is probably 120 miles through some Gorgeous country.

Tim Hancock's knives are quite beautiful, but I don't know if I have the the $ for that kind of piece right now. :o)

Tim is an hour and a half away or better from Flag. His blades start in the $1100 dollar range up if I remember correctly.

Hey,
I live just outside Flagstaff, between Williams and Flag. Would look forward to meeting you. Give me a call at 714.906.5175.

Justin, I've been looking for a way to contact you. Could you give a call? Maybe we can get together and exchange ideas.

Regards,
Steve Hostetler

I live in Flag and Sun Valley is 100 miles east of us. I also read a review and it said she is extremely expensive. She sells for MSRP regardless of what it actually sells for. The example they gave was for a leatherman that was almost twice of what you could buy at it from Walmart.

Hi Steve, I will do that this evening if I get a chance.

If you're still thinking of going to Knife City, it's a few miles east of Holbrook on the south side of I-40. A little lady named Ofelia owns/operates. She has a HUGE selection, and for straight up knife window shopping, I've yet to find a place out west even close to it.

As for customs, she has a VERY small selection that I assume she consigns, but I only saw 4-5 custom blades last time I was there. As for her prices in general....they're ridiculous. While she has a truly impressive collection, they're some of the worst prices I've ever seen. Plenty of good deals on throwing stars though.

As for local makers, the closest guy I can vouch for is Mike Kiley out of Chino Valley, "Rockin' K Knives." I've bought a few of his knives at shows, and they have made incredible users but are impressive to show off as well. Very reasonably priced, with most in the sub-$150 range. Not sure how to get ahold of him though. Good luck.
