I would like to start making knives. I have a background in welding and grinding , but not knives. Can anyone suggest a book, grinder and basic supplies?

weld,

I would suggest the Loveless/Barney book as an excellent primer. It covers the basics very well. Topics include equipment, stock removal, forging, sheaths, etching, etc. with subtopics like making full and hidden tang knives, making knives with files, and flat grinding.
Also, be sure to check the archives. If you have a specific question, try the search function. It often results in a more complete explanation than you can receive from a single thread. If your question is still unanswered or you need clarification, don't hesitate to ask.
