I want something for edc but i cant decide between a leatherman, or a folding knife. the items i am looking at are the leatherman sidekick (or a vicotorinox spirit) and a kershaw crown, kershaw chill crkt ripple, and byrd cara cara 2. I really cant decide

I would ask yourself how often you would need the other than the blade items found on a multi tool. I rarely need those items and when I do I have normally prepared myself with the proper tools. Therefore I personally would never carry a multi tool. Your situation may be completely different in that you need the other tools often when you don't have access to a toolbox. If you find yourself in this predicament then go with the multitool. If not I would believe a knife would suit you just fine.

Agree.

How much use do you have for a blade vs the other tools?

If you use the screwdriver and pliers as much or more than the blade, then stick with the multitool.

If the majority of the usage is the blade, then go with a knife ... or both!

Carry the multitool on your belt and the knife clipped in your pocket.

Since you've already mentioned a few Kershaws, something like the Kershaw Skyline or the new Kershaw Amplitude would be good EDCs.

Stepping up from there, something like the Sypderco Dragonfly 2 or Delica would be excellent EDCs.

I carry both! Some multitools have decent knife blades, but I still like to have a dedicated knife. I tend to use my SAKs and multitools a lot, so if I to choose I guess I'd carry a multitool (one of the Leatherman tools with 154CM or S30V blades).

What works best for me is having a multitool in my backpack or briefcase and a knife in my pocket.

I would try a slightly different approach. I would get them both and carry each of them for a week or two. See if you find yourself needing or using the multitool more or the knife more. If it's the multitool, you can stick the knife in your car, truck, bag, or whatever you keep with you. If it's the knife, you can stash the multitool in your truck, car, bag, etc. That is keeping in mind that you have the same routine all the time. If your routine varies a lot, maybe do as Francisco mentioned and carry both of them, as long as you're comfortable with both of them.

All depends on your own need. I carry a small folder and a small sak such as the mini champ for edc.

Get a multitool with an easy acess blade if pliers and such are something you use a lot (I really liked the CRKT Zillatool for this, flipper blade and a pocket clip, lil big for edc), a SAK for friendly mutitool use, or a good folder or small fixed blade if you use your blade way more than other tools. (BK14 rocks in pocket carry or cross draw.)

I think im just getting a multitool, specifically the leatherman skeletool so i can work on my skateboard with it, while still having a good knife. but i cant decide if the cx is worth it for the plain edge and better steel, or if should just get the original and deal with the serreations.

Something tells me that if I were skating the last thing I would want in my pocket would be a big hunk of multi use metal. I would get a knife and throw the multi tool in the back pack, with the knife being my first priority. If you got both I wouldn't worry to much about the blade steel of the multi tool, since you'd already have a primary blade. Plus don't some skating brands have board specific multi tools? I've been out of that scene for a while, but it just seems like the things you could do with a screw driver and pliers on a board would be pretty limited. I would think the more important tools would be the ratchets for tightening the wheels and trucks. But again, it has been a long time since I've touched a skateboard.

I have carried a SAK on occasion, but I always carry a folding knife of three-inch blade or longer.

Like some of the others, I'm much more likely to use the word "and" than the word "or"; I absolutely hate chastising myself and starting sentences with "I wish", as in "I wish I had remembered to bring my _ _ _ _ _ .".

Admittedly, I have fewer restrictions than most, and might set out on an adventure or go exploring on a whim; so on any given day I'm probably carrying a m-tool, a fixed blade, a locking folder, and a small slip joint.

Just get both. I usually carry a folder (or two) and a Leatherman S2. Works well for me.

I generally carry a multitool. In my day to day I find myself using the drivers on my Victorinox more often than the knife blade. My normal carry is a Victorinox Farmer, but I often carry a Tinker or one of three Leatherman Tools that I own (Wave, Fuse, PST).

carry a spyderco sage folder + a Victorinox cadet. i choose the knife when my pockets cannot fit both (gym, biking, etc.) I wouldnt carry a multitool any bigger than the cadet.
stole a photo from some dude who carries the same stuff as me.

I got interested in multitools for EDC and bought a few- Leatherman Juice, Skeletool and Charge. But then I ended up with a lot of good knives in my EDC rotation and couldn't bear to carry the multitool instead of my good folders.

But sometimes I do carry a multitool in addition to my EDC folder.

I'd say Leatherman Wave is the perfect size. A Vic Trekker is in my pocket 99% of the time or a Rat 1:thumbup:

A good middle ground that works well for me is carrying a fairly basic SAK like a Pioneer, Cadet, or Tinker. I like the extra utility of the screwdrivers and awl. Often I don't even use the tools for their intended purposes. I end up using them to pry, scrape, poke, etc. It is nice to have some other tools to do this kind of stuff without messing up the edge or breaking the tip of a blade.

Knife blade, utility tools, pliers. I need the first 2 daily. I need the 3rd only occasionally.

My solution: EDC knife in RFP, Leatherman Micra in LFP and full sized MT in my day pack.

The scissors on th Micra are outstanding.
