how's it going
i really dont know anything about the wood. Last time i was on Ebay looking at scales was Saturday and they weren't on there then.

Should I not be posting this type of thing here?
hope I'm not doing anything wrong.

I've bought numerous scales from Ebay and have have found that some folks have no idea what they are seeling and will ship you wet wood and unbookmatched set. By the same token, I have found a number of sellers that will send you top quality stabilized wood full of figure and cut correctly.
It's definitely a trial and error situation sorting out the good from the bad.

I totally agree. Anytime you buy from the internet you should be wary. Asking questions is the best thing you can do.

The coloring and patterns were what caught my Eye on these pieces. Not your normal scales sold on Ebay looking stuff. Plus the high bidding scared me away. I be poor folk right now ....lol

There are a lot of sellers selling "stabilized" knife scales. That could mean anything--properly stabilized with an acrylic, soaked in some sort of home brew in a hot mason jar, dipped in Minwax wood hardener, or soaked in Thompson's waterseal.

I've bought some wood from Mike, or Mike C, or something like that. He's local to me, and one day I plan to take a trip down to Tampa and pick stuff out in person.

The woods that I've mostly bought on eBay are woods that don't need to be stabilized.

I agree with all the warnings about eBay wood but still get a lot of my wood that way and have had only a few minor problems; mostly because I got over optimistic interpreting the picture. I mainly buy either wood that doesn't need to be stabilized or larger pieces of wood that I plan to cut up and get stabilized after letting them dry.

One other comment: "The coloring and patterns were what caught my Eye on these pieces". It is very easy to fake up coloring in photographs these days. I try not to fall for it but tend to pay more attention to pattern than color because it's more likely to be an accurate representation (unless I've dealt with the seller enough to trust their photo's color).

yea I personally wouldn't know what to ask or what too look for. I figured with the colors they may have been dyed as well . His listing didn't say either way. I have heard that you can ad dyes to the stabilization. So that could be how he got the bright coloring and who knows when you cut it open it may be flat on the inside on the inside

DO NOT EVER BUY WOOD FROM "GERALDINE"!!!!! His "stabilizing" isn't, I had a set of scales turn into something that looked like beef jerky when I asked him how to fix it he told me I was crazy to ask for a refund. I wasn't asking for a refund, just how to fix the issue.

I hear ya

well all I will say is the Ebayer I was referring to, was not using that name.

the guy says he Polymer stabilizes

Here's a screen shot of one piece .and I sure hope he's on the up and up cuz this one is well over $100 right now

Yeah, that's the other, maybe most important, bit of eBay advice:

Wait for the bargains. They are there, but there are a whole lot more non-bargains.

Oh i know Burl Source has some incredible wood in his threads.

I plan on buying some From Burl Source as soon as i can hit his threads be fore the other guys do. They always get the pieces I want. Plus right now i'm pretty broke.

Bought some Mammoth bone Good price as long as it's a good piece LOL

Have you made knives before? I was under the impression you haven't made one yet?

If you haven't made many, may I suggest saving your money and buy some nice cocobola or maple.

no as a matter of fact i haven't.
I just made my first forge. 2 Bricks Baby. Thats right doing big things.

I've already bought the mammoth. so whats done is done. I'm putting in my hoarding box till the time is right.

I have a piece Osage i'm planning on using for my first knife if it gets that far

I bought from Geraldine - once. When I got it it looked like something was dried all over it. So I sanded it and was not pleased with the result after sanding. It got pretty ugly, pretty quick. So, I don't buy from there any longer.

I put a bid in on two scales from this guy. The picture was so incredible, I thought I was worth a shot. Luckily I have some disposable income to make mistakes with. I try never to make the same mistake twice though. Now I'm sort of hoping I lose the auction.

I bought several sets from the guy when he started selling and they went for a lot less. It was the real deal. His woods were fantastic and he came with a lot of things you don't see every day. Now it seems everyone knows about him and it goes high. Mike

Here's an idea...how about we not mention eBay and linking to it or letting everyone know what to search for since it's considered auction spotting and worthy of an infraction. Auction spotting is not allowed on BFC and this is nothing new.
