I'm in San Diego right now, spending Christmas with my baby brothers. Anyone know of a good knife shop in San Diego that I could go to and check out some real knives in person? I know I can look in the yellow pages, but thought maybe somebody might know of a special shop. Thanks,

IMO the best knife shop in town here is Wright Knife and Sporting Goods. The proprietor Dennis Wright is very knowledgeable and his shop has a large variety of both often-seen and hard-to-find knife brands.

It's located at:
8759 La Mesa Blvd.
La Mesa, Ca. 91941 (San Diego East County)
(619)465-6905 He is usually open Tuesday through Saturday, it's best to call beforehand. Let us know how it goes, and have a great time.

Judy,

Dennis has some really fine knives and is a great guy to deal with!! After all the work you put into picking a knife for your better half, Don't you think you NEED a really nice knife for yourself... You deserve it!!!

(If the price of the decorated or wood inlay small Sebenza gets in your way while talking with Dennis, just remember that a $450 knife is only $1.23 a day for a year. Less than the cost of a cup or coffee...

Even if you don't buy, you will learn. It is worth the trip...

Well, there's a brand new "King of Knives" store in the UTC mall, and Cutler's Cupboard stores in several local malls, notably Horton Plaza (downtown) and Grossmont Center (La Mesa). I've bought a number of knives from Cutler's Cupboard over the years, and they're quite nice, though they're basically retail, as necessitated by being located in major shopping malls. I've had mixed luck over the years with their staff, some have been quite knowledgeable, others less so.

But, as others have said, the place you really want to go is Wright Knife in La Mesa. Dennis Wright is a fellow forum member and a real gem to deal with, absolutely top notch. And he's got a terrific selection of knives, including things like William Henry and Chris Reeve (the largest selection of decorated Sebenzas I've seen), as well as Benchmade (all the way from Emerson 970's to Osborne 940's), Spyderco, REKAT, MicroTech, Buck, and other such fare.

Oops, did I just post? Haven't done that in close to a year (a very busy year); been lurking for the last week or so, though... Hi everybody!

Thanks, Guys!

I'm in Pacific Beach, and my bro said La Mesa is about 15 miles from here. So I will try to stop by tomorrow. My baby bro's are always looking for something special that I need/want..... so I should probably take one or both of them with me so that they can save their money and "surprise" me with a knife - maybe for my birthday or just because I'm their favorite sister.

Merry Christmas!

Not sure what your opinion is on firearms, but for local (non-internet stores), me and my cousin have always found the best deals at gun stores. The mall knife stores and other exclusively knife stores usually have to charge full retail, but the gun stores will often knock off 20-percent. Depends on the store I guess, but when I was in CA, me and my cuz got some pretty decent deals on some Benchmade knife stuff at gun shops. He picked up a nice Kimber .45ACP and a double barrel shotgun as well.

Wright's is the the spot. The rest are standard mall fare (to include toenail clippers and nose hair trimmers)at tourist prices. Manly men (and women)go to Wright's for real knives. Owners pretty knowledgable about Buck knives just down the road to.

I have nothing against guns. When I was married to my LAPD cop, I usually carried his off-duty weapon in my purse. And I did have a shotgun. My previous boss kept it at his house until he could take me out and teach me how to shoot it, etc. Unfortunately, the shotgun was taken during a burglary/vandalism at my house in 1995. It's just as well - the shotgun was too long for me to use comfortably, and I had to shoot from the hip.

I'm a little nervous about any firearms in my possession until/unless I know how to clean them and taken them apart and feel comfortable handling them. But I would have no problem using one on any crook who dared to break into my house with the intent to do me serious bodily injury.

so much for guns. So I guess the answer is that I don't have a problem going to a gun store to check out knives!

And I really am going to make a serious effort to go to Wright's tomorrow. I still can't believe that within just a couple of weeks I have become a KnifeKnut and want to start collecting.

As I was packing (not a gun!) to come to San Diego, I was putting stuff in my toiletries bag, and realized that I keep a knife in there too! Nothing special - just an unknown brand knife that we have been giving out at work for safey incentive awards. So I have taken several home and I come across them occassionally. I guess I liked knives more than I realized!

can you tell it's late and I'm rambling? The wild party here at my bro's apartment just ended and I was able to emerge from my cave to get back to the computer to play. These guys and their friends really party big time. I socialize for a while, then I go hibernate in my one brother's room, which he calls, "The Time of Your Life" room. Great bachelor room. Big screen tv, stereo, huge bed with feather pillow top, a zillion pillows, my own bathroom, personal waiter service by my youngest brother - he brings me dinner, beverages, dessert, breakfast, etc., on the bed tray and I get to live like the pampered favorite sister that I am!

okay.....I'm going back to my cave.

Jeez. You guys are making me blush.

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't been to the General Forum for a while and would have missed this except for Michael. (Thanks for the heads up.)

I've dealt with all of you folks, at one time or another, and it has been a pleasure. I do appreciate the endorsements. They mean a lot to me. I hope your Christmas was a merry one and best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year/Century/Millennium.

TJ stop in anytime. I always like meeting members of the BFC community face-to-face. As Silverwing can attest, I don't bite and I do enjoy "talking knives" with enthusiasts and knife knuts. I'm open 'til 7pm during the Holidays.

(Directions: Take I-8 east to Jackson Drive. Exit, turn right (South). Go to La Mesa Blvd (Next light). I'm on the Southwest corner, & I'm in the corner unit.)

I was just down your way at the Mission Valley Shopping Center. I am not used to traffic and just getting through the signals exhausted me! I asked several people how to get to La Mesa Blvd, and they didn't know, and I was tired and hungry and had been MIA for several hours, so I headed back to my bro's place. Luckily, they had saved me one piece of pizza!

Since you are open until 7pm, I am going to try to drive back over there, especially now that I have directions. I have to see what the bro's have on their mind for the next few hours before they leave for work and I head home.

Hope I get to stop by this afternoon.\
