Hello

Does anyone have recommendations for good knife shops in Houston, Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth Texas? I will be visiting over the next week and a half.

Any recommendations for some good, and inexpensive, restaurants, especially Mexican or Tex/Mex.

Thanks

Phil

As far as knives, you can go to the House of Blades in Fort Worth(817) 626-1713 for a great selection. Prices aren't the lowest, but they've got quite a bit. There's also Cheaper than Dirt www.cheaperthandirt.com which has a selection of knives.

As far as Cheap Tex-Mex you want to find restaurants with family names. In Dallas, the best place for a $5 lunch is Herrera's. I think there are three of them in the city, so you'll likely be close to one. In Arlington (between D & FW) there is a place called Pulido's. Homey little place, but excellent food! Mercado Juarez is another, it's a bigger nicer place but still relatively cheap and homestyle. In Fort Worth my favorite place lately is La Playa Maya. They are a Mexican Seafood Restaurant, but have all of the traditional stuff too. There's also Mexican Inn, Dos Gringos, Pulido's (same family, different owner), The Orignal, shoot I could go on for days.

I will say that if you are in Ft. Worth and want the best margarita you've ever had treat yourself to Joe T. Garcia's in Downtown. The prices are not cheap, but reasonable. But the heaven in a glass is well worth it.

Have fun!

There are knife stores at Collin Creek Mall (Plano), North Park Mall (Dallas), and I think one at Town East Mall (Mesquite). Don't worry, they all run together. Expect to pay full retail. For Mexican food I like Dos Charros in Richardson and for Tex-Mex try Blue Mesa Grill. Not exactly cheap, I guess, but they've got a killer tequila selection. Try my favorite-Chinaco Anejo.

In Austin, don't know of any knife stores, but for good eats check out Guero's (might run into Sandra Bullock), Trudy's (very loud on weekends), or Chuy's (I'm still pissed at them for busting Bush's daughter for underage drinking. Hey, they could have just carded her and kicked her out. Didn't have to call the cops). But, I digress. :)

Anyway, have a great time in the Lone Star State and remember- Don't Mess With Texas. :D

Knife shops in Austin? McBride's Guns usually has a few nice ones, at top dollar.
Tex-Mex in Austin? How much time do you have? Start with El Azteca and Matt's El Rancho - both have been here since the Fifties and are still packing 'em in.

Let me add El Arroyo to the list of good Tex/Mex in Austin. I have a real weakness for their enchiladas del mar.

If in Austin for Mexican food go to:

Avenue Cafe (las menitas). This is actual authentic interior mexican food. It is on Congress (downtown) between 2nd and 3rd street. Also, there are a ton of incredible Mexican food joints on the east side of I35 near downtown......Matts El Rancho is also excellent, I recommend them. They are a little upscale, but have been around for about 50 years, so they are doing something right! They are located on South Lamar. For quick breakfast tacos and such, you can't go wrong with any of the Tamale House's all around town......Also, El Mercado on Burnet, and Arrondo's Taqaria, which is as my friend says "off the hook", which is at Burnet and Keonig.....

There ya go.

There's also a knife shop in The Parks mall in Arlington (30 minutes from downtown Dallas). Although right now it's just a stand in the mall due to renovations. Pretty good selection, usually full retail, sometimes less.

If you go to Collector's in Houston expect to pay full retail.
We don't call it Collector's ripooff for nothing. Cater's Country I-10 and Campbell has a few knives as does American Shooting Center on Westheimer Parkway.

Ah lets see...

In Houston here for knives you have the mall rip-off stores (although the Remington Store in Baybrook Mall I-45 South at Bay Area Blvd. - has a decent selection and decent prices - particularly on SAKs - but other stuff too.)

I've been in Collectors Firearms about four times. The prices always make me leave without anything! The Carters Country stores vary widely in what they have. The store on I-10 is far and away the best knife place.

Bass Pro Shop out in Katy (I-10 West a ways) has guns, knives, flashlights and a whole gob of other stuff!

Eating. Did someone say "Chuys"? We have at least two locations here, but I learned of them on a visit to Austin years ago. Ain't cheap, but ain't break the bank either.

Look up Gringos in Houston (the Pearland location!) for darn good food!

Can't think of anything else to add at this time.

Tere is a Gun Show in Austin every third weekend of the month... not sure of the exact NAME of the venue, but it's on the SW corner of I-35 and 290 EAST toward Houston. There is a Big Truck outside with "GUN SHOW" on the side. This month 19th & 20th. There are several knife booths, a couple of old handmade/custom knifemakers,

Mostly GUNS... DO NOT expect a KNIFE show.

HOWEVER there is one booth in particular which is a MUST SEE... the guy is a friend of Thomas Warren and Allen Elishewitz, and I've never in all my days seen lower prices from these two makers. Many other customs, semi-production and production... The couple running the booth are as nice as could be! Fun for anyone in the AUstin area this weekend!
