I have lots of Fixed Blades, And I am looking for a way to store them.
Many with Sheaths, And all Types of Sheathes, Leather, Kydex, Plastic, Secure-Ex. And all sorts of Steels from the Most Stainless to very Delicate non-stainless Damascus, and I have heard not to store knives in their sheaths, I have had no problems, but I have heard that some people have. And I have Lots of Fixed Blades, Primarily My custom Damascus ones that have no Sheathes at all.

In terms of Long Term Storage, Short Term Storage, General Use- How do Cardboard Sheaths affect the Blades- Rust Primarily, But if there are any other Concerns Please let me know.

In terms of Cardboard Sheaths there are many ways to make them, some Line with tape, some only put tape at the top, some have no tape coming in contact with the Blade, just outside. Some people leave some areas not taped, like at the bottom to let air in.
What if any is the best way to make them.

This is an example I made for my Great Eastern Cutlery Letter Opener

I don't know if it is good or bad but the knife makers frequently pack them with a protective sleeve that is usually cardboard. The only potential problem I see to this method is that paper contains acids. You might recall paper used for framing pictures and prints are acid free.

I did't think that the Type of Cardboard could potentially Make a difference, Perhaps Lining it with some sort of tape like Duct or Masking Tape would alleviate this potential issue.

Anyone have any first hand experience?

some cardboard seems hygroscopic to myself. ideally you should be able to find thin sheets of polypropylene [olefin] & form your own sheaths for storage. olefin is basically fume free so no offgassing.

The cardboard looks like a good idea, but as others have mentioned it may not be the best for your knives. I store mine wrapped in gun paper. Very inexpensive and lasts an extremely long time.

You definitely do NOT want to store them in a leather sheath, or even with the sheaths. The leather gives off all sorts of things that will effect the kinfe over time. Plus the leather attracts moisture. We're talking long term storage here, not short term.

As to cardboard, I think you're going to have some of the same problems. No telling how the cardboard was made or what acids, etc. it may give off. Plus the cardboard is going to attract moisture.

The technigue I have used for long term storage of my handguns is to wipe them thoroughly and liberally with Break Free and then wrap them in the wipe cloth (usually part of an old t-shirt or such) that now contains the excess BF I wiped off. Maybe not the best solution, but I've put guns away for YEARS that way with no problem.

I keep mine unsheathed, or in the cardboard sleeves or tissue paper they came in. Manufacturers' cardboard sleeves generally fit loose so moisture isn't trapped inside and the blades aren't scratched when inserting or removing.
