I'm going to be in that general area this weekend and wanted to know if there are any good shops around?
I think were staying on the north side of town.

Chicago is not a knife friendly area. In the city of Chicago, blade length limit is 2.5", unfortunately. Most of the stores will be selling at full retail or higher. I never buy knives in store, but generally the local gun stores will have them. Then there is Bass Pro Shops in Gurnee, Cabela's in Hoffman Estates. Depending on where you are staying, I can give you some info on LGS's near you.

Beware, in cook county, where Chicago is, sales tax is 9.5%.

Only one I can think of in Chicago is Northwestern Cutlery, (810 W. Lake St.). Mostly kitchen cutlery and supplies, but they do have a good selection of production blades.

in Chicago and many other suburbs it's 10%

Just looked it up. I mistyped. Cook is 8.25% in most areas. Chicago they have apparently changed it again to $10.25%. UGH. Don't forget the additional 10.5% hotel tax. Oh, and in Cook, there is a 3.5% tax (additional) for sugared drinks (other than juice or stuff with "natural" sugar. Wish I could move to Texas sooner. Probably 2 years.

If you are driving, I think GP Knives in Troy IL may be on your way. Nice store with incredible selection.

Didn't think of this. Yes, yes, and yes.

Thanks for al the info.

I’ve been to GPK, it’s really not far for me, I’ll go after work sometimes since I’m already halfway there.

And it looks like my activities are already mostly planned out for me.

GPK is not far for me as I'm in St. Charles County...we will probably run into each other at a local brewery sometime based on some of the photos you have posted in the Beer and Blades thread.

Near Cabelas in Hoffman Estates is Gat Guns in East Dundee. They have a decent selection of BM, Microtech, and a few others. Be warned, I've stood at the knife counter for 5-10 minutes just to wait for someone to show me something. Cabela's in HE has a few BM's, Spyderco's, Case, ZT, Mora, Gerber, Kershaw, ESEE, etc. They are so close to eachother that I suggest checking both out if you head to that area.

They repealed the sugar tax as far as I know. I think it lasted a couple months before enough people complained.

Good to know. I'm in lake county.

A warning--GAT generally sells at MSRP or higher
Ten years ago I'd say the wanted $250 for a ZT 0200!

I don't know how MAP affects their prices, but IIRC their prices were similar to Cabelas... excpet Cabelas has Cook County sales tax (East Dundee is outside of Cook County).

I emailed Chicagoknifeworks.com but they're just a drop shipper.

I'm heading to Chicago in a couple of weeks for work. Bass Pro in Bolingbrook have a few knives - mostly CRKT and SOG mass stuff in clamshells, but a few BM behind the counter. I haven't visited the gun stores because I feel sad I can't bring anything back with me lol
